wow. could we part out an xbox and make money?

yes even current gen Xboxes are worth cash to modders and peeps with Thompson DVD drives...

mines shot id rather buy a used DVD drive than buy another full xbox.. unfortunatly the new stand alone drive is more than a new XBox..

Sure, that XBox 2's hardware specs look pretty good now, but how do you think that they're look 4 years from now? By then, most PC's will probably have 5Ghz dual core CPU's and video cards with a Gig of onboard memory standard.

Probably in the same area as the previous generation ($300)....maybe a little more. There's supposed to be a version with a hard drive and a version without a hard drive.

Memory cards could be from 64mb to 1gb in size.

people who say consoles are cheaper, you are lying to yourself.

you spend $3-400 on the console however you also need to spend $1500 + on a top of the line TV in order to acheive the best graphics. and then you can watch TV also on it.

or you could spend $1000 on a computer, with a 19" crt and a TV tuner, play games, and watch tv and everything else that you could with your now 2grand console.

Since at least as far back as the Atari the console market has been much larger than the pc game market. Pc gaming is more of a nerdy niche market. It will continue to thrive because of computer enthusiasts.

I could see consoles eventually morphing into Mac mini-like pc's that blur the line between consumer electronics and computing. I could see an xbox 5 or 6 that downloads movies and music from napster-like services, has dvr functionality, and generally serves as a media center pc. I think Billy-boy Gates has wet dreams about a device like this.

exactly. there aren't nearly as many "every day computer gamers" as there are "every day console gamers".

and like you said, PC gaming is associated as a "Nerdy" type thing (though, video games in general have this kind of vibe to them), but now a days you will hear everyone and their moms talking about halo 2, madden, or gta.

If you include games like Solitaire, Minesweeper, and Tetris, there are far more PC gamers.

Pogo.com anyone?

OMFG..... come on now... how can you forget about the ever expanding fat asses of soccer moms everywhere? Biggest (# of sales) series of games of all time? The Sims. Mosstly PC version sales because of the expansion / modding behind it.

wtf?!

Most people have a good tv already but very few people will have a monitor that is 20" greater at home. This of course doesn't apply to people 'here' who have 22" crts or 24" Dells 😛

Also the tv people have are generally no smaller then 32".

I can't wait for the next consoles to do higher resolutions and AA 🙂

But you still need a keybaord and mouse to play fps properly. Controller is too slow...

that is the specs on the next xbox that were released last week or so, and supposedly it will be on demo at e3.

since you seem to know it all, what were the original specs for the xbox 1 and what did it actually end up being?

No doubt. Mark my words if you want, but the new Xbox will have 3 G5-derivative chips in it. The sad thing is that I happen to know from an industry insider friend, that the new PS3 WILL be even more powerful then the Xbox2.

I understand your sceptisism, its warrented, they said the same thing about the "Emotion Engine". The fact is that the EE was and is more powerfull then the Pentium 3 in the current Xbox, its just insanely difficult to program for. To this day, developers haven't figured out half of the coding processes that would bring out the EE. And at 200 Mhz vs the 766 P3 or whatever they threw in the Xbox, its quite a powerful chip indeed.

That being said, the Cell Architecture isn't the same as the EE. It is the same in that its going to be insanely difficult to program for. But not that much MORE difficult then the multi-threaded Xbox2. Both systems have multiple cores or CPU's and will be difficult to program for.

I understand that they say the same thing with every new console, but its never been a fact that new consoles will be more powerful. Which in this case is a fact. The Xbox2 and PS3 will be capable of a lot more then PC's will be at the same time, meaning later this year (oct) for the Xbox2 and the PS3 either late this year or early next. This is a fact. So will consoles take over the PC market? No, but its getting closer and closer so that one day may see this happen. What we do know, is if the developers and programmers can do it right, the games on this gen of consoles will finally look better then their PC counterparts, which is saying something.

Give me some of that that you're smoking, dammit. *MOST* people still have 22-inch-ish SDTV's. HD market penetration is still small. I can't blame anyone for staying away from HD, the sh!t is INSANELY overpriced still, and the tech is overhyped (Plasma anybody? That's circa-1997 crap that sucked then and still sucks now, except with an even higher pricetag because it's trendy)

Bottom line? SDTV: $150. HDTV: $1500. Put a TV in every room!

No, of course not. They weren't with the Nintendo, or the Super nintendo, the play station, the PS2, xbox, etc.

PC gaming wasn't even real popular till a few years after the SNES, and is only more popular today because of MMO's. I think it has peaked.

No it is not a fact. The console isn't out yet, and even then its still a ton of hype in a comparison that is apples to oranges. Like it was stated earlier in this thread, it like a game of leapfrog, with the console coming close upon release and then falling way behind after it has been on the market for a year. One or two games in that first year may be worth playing, if you can stomach console games.

The only way pc gaming will die is if the pc for some strange reason ceases to exist.

Right, because you know EXACTLY how far along PCs will be in a year from now.

i dont know what i would do without endless cheat codes, skinning, maps, map editors, mouse, personal keyboard settings, basically free multiplayer, ability to update and patch bugs and glitches..

When consoles start going more toward that area (kind of like the way sexbox is going...underground that is...). I would be more interested in console gaming.

The game Pariah will have a Map Editor for xbox in May. More games are supposed to follow with the same ability. Mouse and keyboard with custom settings is available now with the fragboy adapter. Free multiplayer is available now with XBConnect. Updates and patches have been available for a while now with Xbox Live and xbox magazine disks. I think Skins are going to be available with the next Xbox.

And I go on Xbox Live to avoid people with cheat codes. Nothing worse than trying to play in a multiplayer game when the other person has cheats going on. If you're talking about cheats in single player then they have those on Xbox too.

well console gamings are creeping into the PC's market, with online play and much improved graphics. It's making less and less sense to go out and throw $450 away on a new graphics card these days.

nope

console gaming has always been bigger than PC gaming anyway

and this isn't going to change anytime soon

i agree with both of these guys. i also think that PC fanboys will stay PC fanboys, and console fanboys will stay console fanboys.

neither of the markets will dominate any of the other markets any time soon.

i disagree, i was a die hard consle gamer my whole life (im 36) until about 6 or 7 years ago when i finnally let a friend convince me to buy a 3d card and play FPS online. I was so hooked that in the last 2 years, i probobly have used xbox/ps2/GC maby 3 or 4 times.

but i also agree what they said in an earlyer post, that with consoles being as fast or faster than a high end gaming pc, and just costing a whole lot less, and with the consoles going online, that the only thing to REALLY push my pc aside, is for them to start allowwing keyboards and mouse with custom controls, and mods for all games, not just a few.

and thats not too far behind.

i dont think this coming gen of consoles is going to do it, but they are getting close.

maby in about 5 years they'll start building consoles with the ability to let you upgrade everything on your own, with bigger and faster mem,HD,cpu, ect.

hell, the xbox was allready pretty close 😉 😀
