Could Next-Generation Console games be the end of PC Gaming?

Prelim specs of the new Xbox is three 3.0 ghz processors...and a graphics card that is a step above the current offering from ATI....that's a bear-bones machine that is dedicated to gaming...no OS to bog it down....

Now we know that it won't cost anywhere near the price of a fully-pimped out computer...could this be the end of the road or near the end of the road for PC games?

discuss please..

No, of course not. They weren't with the Nintendo, or the Super nintendo, the play station, the PS2, xbox, etc.

well console gamings are creeping into the PC's market, with online play and much improved graphics. It's making less and less sense to go out and throw $450 away on a new graphics card these days.

Good Lord....why does this topic come up every time a new generation of consoles is talked about.

Because new kiddies are born into that generation. 🙂

For the user console games usually start up quicker than PC games.

For makers console games are more difficult to pirate.

nope

console gaming has always been bigger than PC gaming anyway

and this isn't going to change anytime soon

i agree with both of these guys. i also think that PC fanboys will stay PC fanboys, and console fanboys will stay console fanboys.

neither of the markets will dominate any of the other markets any time soon.

three 3.0 ghz processors. LMAO! Yeah, what did they say for original specs for first xbox? I'd be surprised if it had ONE 3.0 ghz processor.

This same question comes up EVERY time a console is released. And, as always, the answer is NO.

The difference between an average 12 year old firing up a console to play a game is much different than firing up a computer to play a game. Computers have to be managed for updates, patches, spyware, viruses, etc. Neither will kill the other any time soon.

pc gaming is still big. some people have a PC and can get the games more easily than they could a console + games.

and for many who don't own consoles, the PC is a one-stop shop. everything is located in a single area. you can surf the net, read email, IM your friends, and later, play a few games. of course, this factor also has its downsides, but it's a matter of preference.

I pity you for actually believing that the XBox 2 is going to have 3 3.0 GHz processors. If it does, did it never occur to you that it would have to cost more than your average PC, for far less functionality??? At the end of the day, the XBox 2 will only be able to play games unless you hack it.

And no one's denying that console games are looking slicker and slicker. In case you haven't noticed though... PC games can always look better. It's just the nature of the beast when you pick pixels over lines. They look better.

that is the specs on the next xbox that were released last week or so, and supposedly it will be on demo at e3.

since you seem to know it all, what were the original specs for the xbox 1 and what did it actually end up being?

For the end-user or end-gamer....if you have a hd-tv or near hd-tv...what would be the difference if you plugged a keyboard and mouse in to your xbox 2 or ps3?...in all previous generation consoles lauches the specs and speeds were slightly under the top PC offerings....now it looks like they are launching with specs above the PC counterpart...
come on three 3.0ghz!!..that a frigging server...although PC's are taking the 64bit step..

There is so much hype that goes into these console launches its incredible.

Remember how the PS2 chip was supposed to change the course of computing and that Saddam Hussein supposedly bought a huge lot of them so he could use them as a super computing cluster for his WMD? The same hype machine is in effect for this new PS3 chip.

while PC gaming is still big, a lot of developers have become solely console developers, so it's still possible that the next gen spells the final death knell.
On the other hand...the PC will have SLI and real mice lol.

nope console gaming sucks....
when you beat a game on a console its over.... sell it...

when people buy a PC game half the time the MOD teams have a better game in mind using the tools the companies provide...
see Desert Combat... or as much as I hate it.. Counterstrike...

you can never kill the PC gaming market... consoles are for kiddies and sports games...
PCs are for eveything else..

The current development machines for Xbox 2 have two 3.0 Ghz processors. Gamespy has a list of the current known specs for the Xbox 2 that they got from various developers at GDC and they have three 3.0 Ghz processors listed.

The original specs for the Xbox said it was going to use an AMD Athlon processor. Intel undercut them at the last minute.
