Nazi Germany is alive and well in the unconscious because each of us has been through worse than a concentration camp. But because the memory is deeply repressed we are only too happy to create it all over for others. We are the Germans and the Germans are us. If somebody touches our pain we will kill. In a way you are right, it was the rise of right wing authoritarianism as it's practiced today. But more accurately WW2 never ended as it gave rise to the military industrial complex, and ever since we have been under a constant state of war, somewhere. We were warned too, stupid us...

I don't think it would happen here. Our country is very polarized politically and geographically. If push came to shove, we would end up with another "civil war" - but instead of guns it would be a fight inside congress. It would end quickly.
