The other question in my mind is why the this forum and the United States Government has such a giant snit against Iran. When all Iran has basically done is to give the ole US installed Shah of Iran the ole heave ho. But maybe, Iran's worst crime is in being able to thrive despite all the mean and nasty stuff the USA has tried to do to destabilize Iran. (1) After the Shah fell, Saddam Hussein became our man in the mid-east to delimit Iran. As Dumsfeld encouraged Saddam to arm up and helped Saddam buy illegal WMD. And then when Saddam invaded Iran, the USA helped persuade other nations not sell Iran even the arms to defend itself. But at the cost of the bulk of two generations of its men, Iran barely survived. (2) Meanwhile the USA has rebuffed every Iranian attempt to improve relations. Which has hurt the credibility of Iranian moderates and increased the electability of Iranian extremists like Achmadinjad. (3) On 911, while many Arab nations had its people dancing in the street in support of Al-Quida, Iran came out in favor of the USA. In terms of its Jewish community, Iran is the only mid-east country that did not ape the Israeli expelling of its Palestinians with the expelling of their Jews.
As for Saddam Huessein, he and Noreiga committed a sin far graver than any possible sin, because as far as the USA is concerned, there is no greater sin than a tin pot dictator not staying bought. Which may have grave long term Israeli implications, because the USA has done much to buy Israel. And when Israel instead thinks they own the USA, and say fuck you to a settlement freeze, Israel may be inching toward the end fates of Saddam Hussein.
As for Iran, it still the decider of its own foreign policy. If anything, recent Saudi hostility to Iran is solely due to the USA transforming Iraq into a Shia dominated nation. And perhaps a lot of the Turkish motivation to change its mid-east policy is due to that same US invasion of Iraq. And as the Mid-east is seeming on the verge of a total transformation now, the USA has lost almost all cred in terms of effecting change desirable to the USA.
