Could Heat Be the Problem?

I have a Thunderbird 800 system that I've been real happy with up until recently. Pretty much since summer started here my computer has been locking up (more on what I mean in a second) when I play games, but not when things like SETI run. By locking up, I mean that it either freezes (and CTRL-ALT-DEL doesn't work) and the game music keeps playing or that the game just quits and I get booted back to the Windows Desktop or sometimes my computer will just reboot. I have Windows 2000 SP2 with an Asus A7V mobo (tried different BIOS versions), GeForce 2 MX (tried all different drives, same problem with all of them) and VIA 4in1 4.31. My CPU is not overclocked and it is only 11 months old. The only change I made was to connect the L1 bridges with a pencil so I could overclock if I wanted to. I have a normal (AMD approved though) hs/fan combo. Any suggestions on what the problem could be would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

If you can, remove the case and put a house fan pointing at the cpu and if the symptoms disapear it could be a heating problem or maybe the cpu is failing. Also make sure you have good quality heatsink compound. I don't know if that will help much but that's what I would do for starters.

Accordig to Hardware Sensor's Monitor Pro, my ambient is 27 C (80.6 F) and 47.5 C (117.5 F) as I sit here writing this. This is after SETI has been running for several hours. Also, I have the side case panel off and my room is fairly cool (73.6 F) right now as my computer room is in the basement.

At 47 degrees the CPU Temp is well within normal. I'll say try cleaning the pencil markings on the L1 bridges until you are ready to OC. It could be that the pencil overran to the other bridges (4 L1's) causing a short ckt. If the problem still persists start looking on the software side, by going back on what was the last program you installed on your sys that started this problem.

Yeah, I thought of that. I did clean the marks off, and so far it seems to be working. Hopefully this will hold... Thanks for the help guys.
