Costco's Ribeyes are USDA Choice, not Prime

JEDI

Lifer
i was at costco's today.
based on all the talk here about it being their ribeyes being Prime grade, i took a look to see what a Prime sticker looks like.

thats when i saw the USDA Choice sticker.

So why do you say it's Prime grade?

update:
costco reads ATOT! prime ribeye now stocked in Northern VA costco!

Jesus tap-dancing Christ, how can one person post so many threads complaining about Costco? You know they will refund your membership fee if you're not satisfied? Please take advantage of that for ATOT's sake.

i  costco

i shopped costco yesterday and today

i didn't check out the prime bulk beef, just got some water bottles and milk and socks and cereal and something

i thought prime was snapped up by the high end restaurants & hotels before it made it to any grocery stores.

Most of it is. Some higher-end grocery stores and meat markets carry prime. You can get prime cuts at places like Whole Foods and Fresh Market. There's a huge Whole Foods that opened recently in SW Orlando. They have an aged prime meat locker where a 10 lb. prime rib roast can run you @ $500.

now i want a bone-in ribeye. And to damn cold to grill out!

OP, you need to find yourself a local butcher. They will get you whatever type of meat you want, cut however you want.

yeap.

we have 2 local butchers that are great. though one screwed me last summer when i purchased a bundle (200lbs of beef) so not sure i will use them for big purchases.

the other one you can't buy small bundles. the smallest htey have is 400lbs (i think might be 300).

but both have amazing cuts and you want something special they can get it.

Yup, sure as hell beats buying meat from a place that also sells tires, pesticides, refrigerators and sporting goods.

You also get personal service from people who care about your business and are experts in their field as opposed to some snot nosed teenager who couldn't give two shits about you.

Don't need a grill for the next best method, just a cast iron skillet with the Alton Brown method. LINK

You can probably find his recorded aired ribeye episode on youtube if you need.

I have used that method for a few years. but it just doesn't do the same flavor. but yes it is very good.

People have been cooking steaks that way for years and years, way before Alton was born. He does demonstrate the method well for novices to learn.

This thread is making me hungry. Maybe I'll get out some venison ribeyes that I aged for 14 days. Incredible flavor. Of all the deer I've ever shot, this one has by far exceeded any of the others for taste.

I keep hearing this from so many people (how good venison is), drives me nuts that I can't buy it locally to give it a try..

Get your gun and shoot you one. I don't hunt, but I've a redneck cousin who does. So I get all the venison meat I want. He already shot his 10 for the year. I've so much venison burger meat, sausages, steaks, and cubes that I need a new freezer. I plan on smoking lot of the meat and making venison jerky to use up some of the meat.

Do you use Paprika? Could help a little for some smokey flavor.
