Cost of living stuff

So, I see alot of people complaining about how expensive it is to get crappy apartments in California, or other places around the USA, so I just wanted to post a thread with the opposite news. I am graduating from college next week and got a job and all and was looking at one bedroom apartments around where I will be working. And as it turns out If you want a 1 bedroom apartment its $300-$450, yes thats right the FANCY ones are $450 (I'm sure fancy is a relative term here 😛), and you can get 2 bed 2 bath duplex and stuff for under $500 a month. I just sorta thought that was funny. And to buy a 4 bedroom house they are going for like $150,000. So I guess maybe when all those people post threads about how $100,000 isn't enough to get by maybe they should move over here 😛.

The place in question is Athens TN btw, its like 80 miles from any real city which sux, but at the same time I'll be making $60,000 a year and paying $400 a month for rent 😛.

I only got like mapquest picture.

Like I said I'm still at school, I'm just looking at ads in the paper and stuff. I'll be working at that friendly nuclear plant you see a few miles to the northwest 😛.

Cool man. Hopefully you can build a nest egg and pay off student loans, and not blow it all on booze and cheap women. Or women and cheap booze. No, wait.... booze and cheap women. Yeah, that sounds right.

Well the ariel photos have FAR better coverage than Google (which is the worst of all the ones I've seen, only got the big cities).

Microsoft's maps actually have really nice aerial photos. They shoot them at angle, not just from the top down. I also find I can zoom in closer on Microsoft's map.

yeah, they are probably the best, but I have trouble with it for some reason. The resolution on those sidewayes images is actually so good that when I was working for TVA this summer I used it to look at some substation in the Memphis area toto find a transformer not show on the blueprints. So, that gives you a good idea of how good they are 😛.

I suspect... the town's population divided by 2, roughly.

Well it's in TN.... of course it's cheap... TN + Working at nuclear plant is prolly good money wise but whats there to do out there.

Congrats. Just play it smart and save big now while you have the lowest debt you'll likely ever see in your life. I'm assuming you have no student loans going from your posts in the other thread.

I'm in Chattanooga... There's a little nightlife, plenty of good food, and my commute is a dream. It's likely that I'll be moving to a place similar to Athens in another 3-4 years after my wife starts working.

Athens isn't a bad place to be....I wouldn't be surprised though if everything closes at 8pm. My advice if you're making $60k a year in Athens is to buy a mediocre house there instead of pissing your money away on an apartment....that is, if you expect to be there more than 2 years.

Or, for that matter....buy land while you still can.

Usually the places where the cost of living is higher there's more jobs and such. But if you got a good job where the cost of living is cheap, start banking cash and paying off loans. Don't go blowing it. You got a good thing going.

There's plenty to do. Taking banjo lessons and practicing can take hours every day! 😛

there's plenty to do. He's very close to the Smokies, dozens of lakes and in the fall it's a short drive to the best college football around 🙂
