how should this RAM post?
166mhz? confused b/c mine posts as that...

Read the thread, this RAM runs on ANY platform. At 166 MHz fsb the, DDR runs at 333 MHz which is BELOW specs for this ram, since it runs at 200 fsb or 400 MHz DDR. No problems! :)

sorry for the lack of details...
here is the system:

Corsair VS1GBKIT400 1GB Kit DDR400 PC3200 CAS2.5 Value Select Memory Retail ***

EPOX EP-8KDA3J nForce3 250Gb Athlon 64/Sempron Skt754 DDR ATX Motherboard w/Audio, Gigabit LAN, Serial ATA Retail

AMD Sempron 2800+ 1.6GHz Socket 754 Processor Retail

does this provide more info? thanks

I see your board here. Epox board It's 800 FSB so the DDR should post at 200 MHz

I looked at the manual for your board and I don't see jumpers for the FSB so I am assuming this is done from the BIOS. The manual does say that when using two DIMMS one should be in DIMM slot #1 ans the other in #2 or #3. Make sure the DIMMS aren't in slots 2 and 3. read about this on 3-7 of your manual.

Now the BIOS. On page 4-5 it looks like you can set the max Mhz if you use PC2100 or PC2700 but as long as it's set to AUTO it should detect the proper speed. You could try to set it at 200 because the manual says it will then set it at DDR400 speed.

I am probably not helping much because I know zip about this board but if you check those two things I found maybe it might help.

Is this better RAM than spending a little more for Hyper X (when it's ~$95)? Or a Geil 1GB stick for $88 (if you don't have 4 slots and may want 2GB at some point)?

You should make that clear then. That's what emoticons are for. Good luck.

I'm putting together a new A64 system, I just have 2 questions.

Would it be worthwhile to spend the extra $7 on Crucial, or pick up the Wintec for a little cheaper that some reviewrs have said can hit 240mhz?

(sorry for the newb question here)

Is it possible to run DDR2 memory on a A64 DDR system, just to run it in DDR mode? Monarch has 1GB kits of OCZ PC2-4200 for $91, and I'd happily spend an extra $20 to future-proof my RAM purchase until AMD comes along with DDR2 mobo's.

edit: Nevermind, a little googling basically sums up question #2, that's too bad.. but RAM is cheap. :)

It's not possible to run DDR2 in a DDR slot. DDR2 has 240 pins and DDR has 184 pins.

The difference between Crucial and Wintec might be negligible. Both are CAS 3 rated. Price difference at Newegg looks like 34.50 to 38.99, although you're right, one guy claimed 245 MHz at CAS 3 for the Crucial.

If you're going to OC an A64, I've read you need decent memory as the A64 controllers are a bit finicky. I have an A64 3200+ with a 512 DIMM of some CAS 2.5 PC3200 that runs great (Legacy brand I think). I bought another 512 MB DIMM of KIngston PC3200 and it wouldn't even boot. Try to get both DIMMS of the same memory brand and chips if you can. If I had a choice between just Wintec and Crucial, I would pick Crucial. It's always been solid stuff in my experience.

Are you saying Crucial is only $7 more than the Corsair this thead is about? Are you considering or asking about Corsair at all?
