Corsair HX650 enough for i7 930 build?

I'm trying to build a new system and just wanted to get some advice about this particular PSU:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139012

I'm looking to build a system with:

i7-930 OCed
Either ASUS/ASrock/Gigabyte X58 Mobo
GTX 200 series or maybe a 470 vid card
6 GB RAM
2x optical drives
2x SATA HDDs
Couple of case fans

I *MAY* want to do SLI in the future, but for now, definitely just one video card.

Will this 650 watt PSU be plenty of juice for the current build and possibly an SLI setup later? I chose this one because of the price (around $100) and the fact that is modular.

Thanks!

If you're looking to get a Fermi, no. Get a 5870 and you'll be good to go, otherwise step it up and get an HX850.

I ran a 5970 on a 520HX with my 930 OC'ed to 4.2ghz. System was stable.

It will work fine, but will not leave much head room for a high end card a few years down the road.

With the route AMD is taking in terms of performance/power consumption I doubt we'll be needing anymore juice in the next couple of years.

For GTX 470 SLI, the HX650 won't be sufficient, and even a HX750 will be calling it close if you plan on putting a decent overclock on both the CPU and GPUs. I'd actually go for an HX850 just to get some extra breathing room.

I decided not to get a 470, but instead will be getting a Radeon HD5830 due to the cheaper price. While I want a nice fast system, I have to keep it somewhat reasonable in price and $350+ for a 470 is a bit steep for me.

So I think the HX650 should handle the i7-930 OCed + Radeon 5830 (probably won't OC it).

why not get a 5850? there was one going for $279 AR/BCB recently IIRC

5830 is only $220 AR from newegg. I'd rather save the $60 at this point.

edit: now that i've read more reviews on the 5830, i may not get it anymore haha. seems it's only slightly better than the 5770 but costs a good deal more. damn....dunno what to get now.

I've already seen a system running 470 SLI and an OC i5 750 on an HX650, runs like a champ. Also, there's what the Canucks have said. That's including a i7 920 OC @4GHz, the total machine usage is 541W under load. It'll even handle some GPU OCing, as long as you don't go nuts with it. Remember, Corsairs can run at their rating for the life of the PSU, and I doubt most people will ever do that.

I have that PSU with a 5850. It is a fabulous beast.

If you can get a 5830, think about getting a 5850 it is superior in every way (if they are close enough in price).

do some reading in the video forum if you haven't. The consensus is 5850 overclocks well, and when overclocked it isn't far off 5870 performance-wise. The only other worthy card in the 5000 series would be 5770, which also happens to OC quite well from what I have seen. Otherwise you would be better off with occasional deals on older 48x0 stuff.

A 541W typical load is too high to be putting regularly on a 650W unit. And they're also only looping 3DMark, if you throw it under a decent load (not even max mind you, just typical gaming), you get much higher - http://www.hardocp.com/article/2010/05/10/galaxy_geforce_gtx_470_gc_sli_review/8 . 585W for reference, and 660W on the lightly overclocked Galaxy models. You really don't want to run your PSU at more than 70% load regularly if you want it to last and stay stable and quiet. However, this is all moot since he's not getting GTX 470's.

The 5850 would still be the way to go. $272 after 12% cashback - http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...732&CatId=3669 . Or $282 after cashback if you prefer XFX's warranty http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=5252732&CatId=3669 .

Heh, yeah after a lot of reading and consideration yesterday, I actually did go with the 5850. I ended up getting the Sapphire one for about $280ish after BCB. I figured since this new build would last me a good 4-5 years, I'd better get something pretty decent to hold me through.

I'm going from an AMD Athlon X2 3800+ and BFG 7950GT to an i7-930 and Sapphire Radeon HD 5850. I'm expecting to see some HUGE performance boosts.

I was also going to get the corsair HX750 PSU since it has a 140mm fan, but it seems like the only place that had it in stock was newegg and it was a bit too pricey. Other places like amazon had it for a pretty good price of about $140 AR, but again, OOS. I'm pretty confident the HX650 will be plenty for me for this setup.

I think you'll be very happy and will see substantial performance improvements across the board. Since you got the 5850, the HX650 is more than sufficient, even for Crossfire. The system in my sig, with its overclock, only pulls 380-400W under gaming load (factor in 80-85% for actual output, so ~320W).

They'll run fine at rated load for gaming, for the life of the unit. The HX650 can handle 700W+ for extended periods of time @40C, it's not gonna hurt it.

Good call on both counts, the 5850 is a great card and the HX750 may be the best PSU that Corsair currently sells. It's made by CWT and it's a real beast, it'll output 850W+ at 40C without even flinching.

oh cool, that was my 666 post, yay for me.
