Better Rosey Thang than Rosey Palmer.

And Nintendo could chime in, "Would you like a side of Wii with that?"

A rose by any other name...

That said, Core Duo and Core Solo sounds retarded. And Nintendo Wii sounds like you're talking about a weener. Something out of the gradeschool playground.

First, some five-century-old wisdom: "A rose by any other name is still a rose."

Second, a reality about a free market dominated by a seriously competing duopoly -- or at least two "dominant firms." Whatever you call it, performance will eventually be the trump card, and the name won't matter nearly as much.

Third, according to the article, we'll only have to wait until "3rd quarter, 2006" to start seeing some reviews.

Fourth, those conservative DIY over-clockers amongst us -- like me -- will watch the market for several months thereafter to see what a larger number of reviews say, how the competition responds, and how the prices shake out.

Otherwise -- it's just a new rose . . . . . and I'm still going to wait a bit before I decide to plant it in my garden . . . .

Pfft, you miss out on the best deals that way, like the mobile athlon xps and the opterons. You gotta catch early wind of those things and just go with it, as soon as you hear something's overclocking well (on air and commonly available), you go for it, you don't wait for absolute confirmation or you end up with the deal disappearing and you're stuck with more expensive and less able mainstream processors.

Core 2 Duo:

It means it's Core 2 (2nd Gen Core CPU) DUO (DUO=cual core). Core Duo was the first gen "Core" CPU that was dual core (DUO). Core solo is the first gen "core" cpu that is single core.

anyway, it's still a bad name.

.... any difference?

i didnt think so

There definately is a difference...

Athlon 64 X2 (Athlon 64 times 2? makes sense)

Core Duo (Dual Core makes sense)

Core 2 Duo (Dual Core 2--this is a revolutionary change -supposedly- it should have a revolutionary name or a name denoting its advancement of the Pentium line as Intel's current best performing chip is the P4 XE)

Not terribly indicative...

Hmm the name stinks, they gonna get quite a few customers confused, as a lot of people dont know intel or amd, they know pentium, as long as it had that they were happy. And athlon is a great name, i got no idea why intel decided to drop the pentium name, as for the noob user, well they dont even know what clock speed the cpu runs at, let alone know that its overheating so pentium name spoilt i quite doubt that. Although the athlon name still strugles a bit with some people of its dark athlon heatengine/smokegenerators without heatsink past. Maybe the changed the name for the enthusiast community, but that is even more stupidar cause we dont care whats its called just how it performs.

On another note actually its supprising how much market share amd has gained, before u were lucky to find athlons anything in stock at all, now most of the local shops sell amd cpus and prebuilt amd rigs more than the intel ones. I guess they proly were sick of intel cpus overheating and crashing, lol its australia after all. :p

lol they should have called it the Pentium V FUSION POWER TURBO EXTREME!
Seriously though I do find their retarded new naming schemes to be very confusing. Maybe it's just time they went to Sexyum.
