When they went with Centrino, it worked out ok for them. You see a lot of ads where Centrino is mentioned, not Pentium M. Not too many people are hung up on the Pentium name anymore.

I'm just upset that people get paid for this.

Next Generation 'Core Duo' = 'Core 2 Duo'

OMG! They are teh smart!

What does AM2 have to do with this?
The processors are still Athlons....AM2 is like LGA775, nothing to do with what the CPU is called to the masses. Unless somehow AM2 has just become the name for the new CPU's from AMD...

Nah, the Pentium 4 pretty much soiled the Pentium name.

Uhh well no but the AM2 is a chipset etc. and the chips will still be Athlon 64bit X2 dual cores etc. etc..

Now now, the northwoods were pretty good, especaily the later ones, Prescott on the other hand was utter crap, and williamette was too. Cedar Mill doesn't look to bad either, just not very common.

They should have called it "Conrotium". At least then I'd know which chip it was. When can I buy it in a system from Dell Canada?

The naming scheme is pretty bad. No information can be gathered from that except that it has multiple cores.. And what consumer would understand that?

Speaking of marketing and core2 duo.. Does anyone remember the anti-intel commercials that apple put out a long while back? They were BS and inflated with Machead propaganda. Intel never really bothered to 'retaliate'. Good choice. Look whos on top. Now THATS karma.. Props to intel.

We already have a 50/50 ATI / Nvidia ... Now lets fix this CPU market.

On the high end add in boards Nvidia is outselling ATi 3-1 or even greater...

However OEM deals keep ATi level.

I still can't believe they're planning to seriously call a processor the "CORE 2 DUO... EXTREME!"

I mean.. that's got to be some late April Fool's or something.. that's just.. wow.. bad..

A. that's the socket name, the CPUs are still going to be known as Athlon X2s (probably X4s when they go quadcore)
B. it is much better, you're right.

Core 2 Duo is just lame, there's nothing unique about it. It doesn't have a name that when you hear it, you immediately identify with it. Pentium, Athlon, GeForce, Radeon... now, Core? that's just lame, at least try.

that is pretty f'n lame. i prefer to the cores by their development shorthand nicks. cpm, wmt, nwd, psc, tlt, bns, dtn, mrm, and so forth. of course that'll make you sound like a real life dilbert.

Maybe could've been Pentium V. and pronounced "vee" instead of "five." if they wanted they could get a marketing thing going with microsoft like "vee-ista! buy both together!"

At least it has a name. Code names, marketed name, pre-release name, common name, also known as name!!!!!! For the love of god I want to know what to search for at newegg.

Where are you seeing that it comes out on Monday (paper launch or not)? It says 3rd quarter in the article.

It's just the announcement of the brand name. The product launches in Q3.

First, some five-century-old wisdom: "A rose by any other name is still a rose."

Second, a reality about a free market dominated by a seriously competing duopoly -- or at least two "dominant firms." Whatever you call it, performance will eventually be the trump card, and the name won't matter nearly as much.

Third, according to the article, we'll only have to wait until "3rd quarter, 2006" to start seeing some reviews.

Fourth, those conservative DIY over-clockers amongst us -- like me -- will watch the market for several months thereafter to see what a larger number of reviews say, how the competition responds, and how the prices shake out.

Otherwise -- it's just a new rose . . . . . and I'm still going to wait a bit before I decide to plant it in my garden . . . .
