I'll remember thread this when you make a post about your house getting robbed.

my car got busted into once, guess what the cops did about it: NOTHING. Writing tickets is easier.

ture that it's not their fault tho. Write your congressman and demand a higher speed limit!!!!

What would you suggest that they do? What? Huh?

i don't know, investigate, dust the car for prints, ANYTHING maybe? should i just not call them next time?

I'm sorry, but if you don't feel comfortable operating your vehicle at speeds of 65-70mph, then stay off of the highway. If you notice every other car around you is changing lanes so as to pass you, even if you're following the prescribed limit, then you're the one endangering them...not vice-versa. Basically, just keep up with the flow of traffic, and do NOT slam on your brakes everytime you see someone four lanes over and half a mile ahead slow down.

Good lord, I hate drivers in Atlanta.

hells yeah but it ain't just in atlanta, it's in a place called EVERYWHERE. so write your congressman damn it and ask them "do you drive? do you hate it? raise the fvcking speed limit!!!"

oh no, cops doing their job. what a horrible thing.

well, they could be writing tickets...or they could be stopping rape, murder, domestic violence, robbery, terroists .... etc

I guess speeding is more important

OINK!

It's not the police department's job to stop rape/murder/etc. They're there to respond after the fact.

I believe there was a lawsuit against a police department for failure to prevent something, and the ruling was that it's not their job to 'prevent' it.

I don't know if I fully buy into this philosophy. I can see how you can't hold a police department responsible for a crime being committed, but the cornerstone of our justice system is that fair, humane punishment--coupled with respectable uniformed officals enforcing our chosen laws--should prevent crime by dissuading criminals.

Get a radar detector and just don't get caught. I've done over 100 on the freeway and not get caught yet (~5 times so far, licence for 6 months). I am not doing it again, but the detector saved me on two of the occasions.

How do you even know they were writing them tickets? Maybe they letting them off with warnings.

Good for them. You know how many car crash admits we got in between 4am-9am, more than we had the capacity to handle. People drive like maniacs, especially during the holidays. for the cops.

'Should' doesn't equal 'does'. Example: We have very solid traffic laws..yet people keep complaining about traffic tickets. Enforcement isn't always a deterrent.

Proactive law enforcement (ie patrolling neighborhoods, etc) does dissuade criminals, but LEOs can't be everywhere at once. Incidentally, I went on a ridealong back in September...ten hour shift, and we only made two traffic stops. One resulted in an arrest, and another in a verbal warning. Some departments have traffic units, and all they do is traffic -- so naturally they aren't going to be waiting for domestic violence calls..they're out enforcing traffic laws.

As far as the car break-in -- the clearance rate of larceny/burglary crimes is low, and higher profile cases consume more resources (and have higher clearance rates). I'd rather have several people working on a murder case than someone trying to find out who broke into a car.

I'm a criminal justice major, btw..if you couldn't guess :p

Cops are very helpful at sometimes. That said, I agree with the OP that it's weak to pick one specific day to do their job. Why don't they just give out speeding tickets regularly? Because then they wouldn't catch anyone. I can't wait until one of you people who are saying "OMG the cops are totally doing their jobs, stop driving like an ass" gets ticketed for going 68 in a 60 zone then comes on ATOT and b!tches about it

Luckily I had my radar detector on and slowed down since the chick that passsed me got pulled over.

I guess they need to meet their quotas before the end of the year.

sweet, the more idiots like you that get pulled over the better. i'd rather see you on the side of the road than crashing into my car.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I'm not naive enough to think that just because our justice system "should" determine crime, it actually "will." I was saying that the idea behind the system isn't to simply try and patch things up after the fact, but to try and prevent them from happening in the first place.

However, if certain laws aren't working (i.e. traffic laws), then perhaps it's time to re-examine the laws themselves. I wouldn't say it's the fault of the police officers for failing to effectively enforce the laws, nor would I saw it's the fault of the many citizens for failing to adhere to them. Basically, if it appears as though a majority of the population is pissed off about--or at least ignoring--something, then it's probably time for a change.

You definitely have a point..70mph highway speed limits annoy me to no end. As for preventing crime, states with lenient CCW laws tend to have lower crime.. ;)

As for the OP's original statement, though...all they're doing is their job..and on Christmas, there's probably not much else to do.. :p

I'm getting the impression that folks in the US follow the speed limit a lot more closely then other countries.

In Canada, we tend to go over the speed limit a lot! ;)

So you call me an Idiot for complaining that the cops were out in force on a holiday where in my 30+ mile trip to work I saw 10 cars and 15 police. I never once said how fast I was going. I go the same speed everyday I goto work 5-10 MPH over the limit. All you yuppie liberals never fail to amaze me, you come in her and whine, complain, and talk crap like you have never done anything wrong.

IDIOT Definition

1. A foolish or stupid person.
2. A person of profound mental retardation having a mental age below three years and generally being unable to learn connected speech or guard against common dangers. The term belongs to a classification system no longer in use and is now considered offensive.

As you can see I am no IDIOT. My daughter however is considered an idiot by definition 2. So you all get off your high hourse and run don't crawl back into the hole you came from.

People who speed deserve a ticket period. No matter how stupid the law is, do not break it. You have no right to break a law, the govt>you. If you want a higher speed limit, write your governer.

I have never received a ticket driving the speed on the road :p

Isn't as if they didn't know the speed limits on the road.

If they weren't all pulling over the "dangerously criminal" speeders they'd be patrolling neighborhoods and keeping houses from being robbed. But I guess they actually hire officers specifically for traffic detail now that I think of it, so that arguement isn't really valid (at least here in Va Beach).

It is statistically proven that the solid majority of drivers speed. it is also the opinion of major engineering organizations that our freeways are designed for safe travel at speeds far beyond our current speed limits. in fact, they are designed to more or less the same specs as the german autobauns. it is also the LAW that speed limits must be set to the speed at which 80% of drivers are driving that fast or faster. yet our highway administration is the first to admit that they don't bother to obey that law or even to regularly collect the data. as long as the feds fail to obey their OWN laws regarding speed limits, i sure as hell am not going to feel guilty about being in the majority of americans who also break speed limit laws.

1- i'm actualy a right wing slacker.
2- i would go over the speed limit if there wasn't anyone hear me and i felt it was safe, but i wouldn't bitch about getting pulled over. i choose to do it knowing what would happen when i got caught.
3- the reason they go out in force on days like today is because more acidents happen on holidays, they are doing it to save lives not make money.

I got a speeding ticket coming home from seeing my grandma in the hospital on new years day for doing 5 over. If cops want my respect than they need to act like normal human beings.

It's very ignorant to lay a blanket statement on all cops. So, I'll just remember that "Cops suck!" when he gets blindsided by a speeder on the highway.
