True story:

we were eating at the Korean BBQ when one of the guys I was with tells me about the time 2 chicago cops pulled him over for apparantly no reason.

So they pull him over and the cop strolls up and my buddy begins by playing the german national anthem (which is really bizarre since he's asian) that he had laying around. The cop walks up and is like "i pulled you over for a busted headlight" now in a small town this might be of consiquence but in Chicago cops should have better things to do. So my guy is like "WTF you pulled me over for that?!" The cop asks for DL/Ins and when he walks back to the car my buddy steps out and starts goose-stepping in front of the squad car (music still goin, just louder). The cop goes "get back in your vehicle" my buddy is like "no". The cop says "get back in your vehicle" my buddy goes "ok if i call the secratary of state tommarrow and ask him if there is a law that madates that I have to be in my car during a traffic stop, what do you think he is going to say?" the cop then goes "Look you are making my partner (A girl cop) nervous and the longer you stay out here the longer we will take to write your ticket". Anyways althoguh it was a case of "i fought the law and the law won" i still respect the man for not taking the CPD's lame excuse for drug fishing sitting down, hell i woudla paid for the ticket had it not been so long ago.

afew bad cops doesnt make them all pigs though...hell i have more reason than most to dislike cops, considering the number of traffic tickets i have...but i understand most of them are decent people doing a difficult job for peanuts...

Your friend is lucky he didn't get a gun in his face, particularly in Chicago. There's a lot of expected routines which goes into traffic stops to keep some lunatic from assualting an officer, and staying in the car is one of them.

Well there are routines and there are laws, cops enforce laws not routines

I didn't say it was a law. All I said was that he was lucky he didn't get the dangerous end of a Beretta pointed at him.

No, there's no law, the same way there's no law that says you can't reach around your car / go for the glovebox / dive into the back seat when a cop stops you. But if you do any of those things, the cop (if following protocol) will start calling for backup with one hand and have his pistol pointed at you with the other until another two cruisers are in place. Any aggressive action, even unarmed, is cause enough for the officer to act to defend himself.

QFT

EDIT: you have to understand what these guys are up against...they have no clue what they are getting into when they pull over someone...and with attitudes like what have been demonstrated in this thread towards law enforcement...can you really blame them for acting as they do?

Very well said, but a lot of people here will not get this through their thick skulls and will proclaim their right to fight "The Man" no matter what.

i dont think getting out of your car is an "aggressive action" nor is walking side to side behind your car. Being complacent about your rights lets them take a little more every time.

In a thread entitled "cops are pigs", I didn't expect everyone to understand what I was saying. :) Glad to see a couple people did, though.
