We use this tool in our department all the time. I was actually the first one to be able to use it when we first got it and were trained. We have full authorization to use it, and reshock as OFTEN AS NEEDED IN ORDER TO GET THE SUBJECT TO COMPLY WITH COMMANDS! They (the subjects) retain FULL USE of all limbs once the shock (5 seconds) is done. They are probably a bit disoriented at first, but should have NO REASON to not be able to comply at that point. I have seen videos that showed 5 or more shocks within a 30 second period. Some people just dont get it.

Oh, and if you reach for those barbs sticking out of you and rip them off before I can get another shock going.... I will reload another cartraige and hit you again....

Believe it or not, the Taser is actually LOWER on the USE OF FORCE chart than pepper spray. It hurts a helluva lot more, but it is considered lower use of force... it is the second thing we go to in the jail where I work.

Hah. That bitch deserved every volt. Maybe next time she'll think about talking back to the cops and refusing to put down her fcking cell phone. Hopefully a couple volts found their way into the phone and killed it during the first zap :D.

Goodwin said the department has treated her family unfairly ever since a relative filed a lawsuit against the city in the early '90s. She had been calling her brother to come to the scene because, she told officers, "I don't trust y'all."

Hmm  Treated unfairly my ass. 52 in a 35 = you're getting a ticket, bitch.

Cop 1: Hey, check out the SUV a'speedin past. Ain't that Joe Goodwin's second cousin? You know, that guy that filed the lawsuit against the city 10 years ago?
Cop 2: It shoooore is. Let's go git 'er! Light er up! WHOOOOOOHAAAAAAH!
Cop 1: That oughta learn em to file lawsuits 'gainst the town of Boynton Beach, yessireebob!

When you say "barbs", are they really barbed? Any chance of using a gun that doesn't penetrate skin? Are they as effective?

Edit: BTW Evan, that was a hoot!

Can the barb be retracted before it's pulled out? Sheesh, I'd worry more about that, than the shock.

It's very very small really. The newest models are smaller than they were at inception in fact, so they'll probably keep improving on that design aspect. I'm FAR more worried about the 40% failure rate.

From what Ive experienced, there is NOT a 40% failure rate.

The barbs are about the same size as a #16 fish hook. They are small, and once shocked, they pull out of the skin with VERY few problems. The shock itself is what cartilizes the skin and stops the bleeding...

The likelyhood of the shock damaging the cell phone is almost non-existant. It has been shown, nea, proven that you cant kill electrical devices with this thing. After all, you can shoot someone with a pace-maker, and the only side effect is that he will be pissed at you later on down the road.

The #1 rule is SAFETY. this device is safe, effective, and NON-LETHAL. We win, the bad guy wins (sort of... we dont kill him) and the public wins...

Hahahah....that b&tch deserved it. Maybe she learned her lesson to put down her cell phone and listen to a cop when he asks her to do something.

I'm not against tasers, but they're not really up to snuff yet. While the manufacturer lists their incapacitation rate at 84% (for the m26, the most commonly used taser by law enforcement), field tests have returned incapacitation failure rates of up to 40% (houston is one fairly extensive example recently). More important to me is the misfire/ftf (failure to fire) rates of pre-m26 version which approached 40%. The m26 (and it's new improved cousin the x26) is a vast reliability improvement, but still fails 15-40% of the time according to all nationally compiled statistics.

I would sue - not for the first shock, but for the second. I hope I could at least be allowed to check (on the officer that tasered it the second time) if one can put its hands behind the head immediately after being tasered. If the officer would be able to do it in 5 seconds, I would drop the lawsuit in a second.
(By the way, him being a man means he would receive the shock from the taser set at max - or maybe a bit overvolted)

ok, after reading that article... i could care less how many times she got shocked. you have to be a complete moron to open your car door as an officer is approaching you. and it seems as tho she's moving around on the ground after the shock... and it seems like a good 10 seconds after she fumbles out of the car before she is tazed again. I have 0 sympathy for her. It's like suing for spilling coffee on yourself. None of this would be an issue if you had just STFU and listened to the officer the first time.

Am I the only one that read this, at first glance, as meaning the chick had a taser and the cops shot her?

The officers have heard you complaints. When they pull you over, they will forgo use of the taser and crack you upside the head with a nightstick and spray you in the face with pepper spray instead.

ummmm, I already said you can function a few seconds after the shock. It's disorienting for a few seconds after, but not incapactitating. Furthermore there are no 'settings'. It's a taser, not a phaser from star trek.
