I strongly recommend not to remove the metal plate of the K6-2. Without it, it looks a lot like a Socket A CPU without the four little pads stabilizing the HS. I assume AMD didn't make SoA-CPUs with metal plates because they produce way too much heat but I'd never try to install a HS on such a CPU when there are no pads, because there's a quite a chance of destroying the core or not making good contact between HS and core. So unless you get proper pads for your K6-2, I think you're in a better position when not removing the metal plate.
And one more thing: Overclocking a K6-2 which has no L2-Cache often yields only poor speed gains so I think it's not worth the effort.
