burnedout: You left onr off the list. The Mosin-Nagant in the hands of the sniper that Carlos Hathcock took out (with whats left of the scope of course). That would be one cool looking gun. :)

EDIT: BTW, major respect to you for passing USMC Sniper School. With the high washout rate, you'd have a significantly better chance of meeting a dropout than a graduate.

In regards to the "guns can't be cool", popping AOL CDs with a Ruger 10/22 is some damn cheap fun. For about $5 you can buy a couple hundred rounds of .22 LR ammo and that's a good days worth or target shooting. As long as they're used properly guns can be alot of fun and be cool as well. Hell, when I had my BB gun (uncles broke the seals) I'd use it on one pump to scare the deer away from our horse's feed... and play ankle tag with my friend, but that wasn't really a safe hobby.

How many people with knives do you see out there that have them because they're cool looking. I do carry a REI Spyderco on my keychain, and it gets used (properly) on a regular basis.

Burnedout... you are correct if memory serves about the M21... the M24 OTOH is .308 Springfield, with match grade ammo. Seeing as that i'm from a military, not hunting background, i would say that i favor the M4 carbine in a long gun (i don't own a personal long gun), and definitely my Sig Sauer 229/.40 in a handgun. I also have an older Detective's Special .38 revolver that would probably be used for my primary home defense weapon, if ever necessary. I'm very familiar with pistols, but as I am a relatively heavy sleeper and slow to wake up, something simple like a revolver is a better choice for home defense for me... if i was awake, then i suppose i would go for my Sig :)

glenn1: Believe it or not, our home defense weapon (i.e. hapless burgler inside the house) is a shotgun. Reason is our daughter is in the other room. I have a couple of older wheel guns (love 'em for that reliability), but worry about a bullet penetrating the drywall.

I too am from a military background. Only fired the M4 once before I retired. It's pretty cool and fairly accurate. Seemed the flight of the round dropped more than a '16A2 though.

Yes, M24! I fired her once at ANCOC at Fort Benning in 1993. Shot very well. I was impressed! Man, I was hitting silhouettes out to 500 meters. No cheek piece either. Just picked it up and commenced firing. Hadn't even held the weapon before. Smooth and sweet!

That was a real cool demonstration shoot for senior NCOs. Also fired the .50 cal sniper rifle that day. Not much kick, but the blast just shocks you so much. What a killer rifle! I can see why SF/Rangers/USMC Recon/Delta Force use it. It'll take out nearly anything, including wheeled vehicles.

But, you know, that old M21 was a beauty. Solid. 20 round mag also made you feel a little better even though the idea is one shot, one kill.

I love those old .38 Detective Specials. Super reliable. Fits well in the hand. Good to have around as you know it's gonna work when needed.

The really big Super Soaker. You know, the one with the back-pack to hold water? Yah, nothing say's "Boo" like a few quarts of ice cold water! ;)

I asked because you said that guns aren't cool. In my experience, that's a typical response from a person who has usually never held a gun, much less fired one. So I was just guessing that you hadn't.

mzystkal: I agree, that super soaker kicked major a$$. I wonder whatever happened to that thing? Do kids these days even play with water guns anymore?

Of course we still play with water guns. It's just that now, super soakers do about as much damage as a bazooka.

The 30mm GAU-8/A Avenger Gatling Cannon, hands down. One damn sweet gun!

This is the A-10 Warthog's primary weapon.... a short few second burst of fire from this thing mangles a tank to nothing.

-Seven barrels
-4,200 rounds per minute (10/sec max per barrel) - think for a second how fscking FAST that is
-77 horsepower motor is needed to power the gun

ammo:
-High explosive incendiary (HEI), Armor piercing incendiary (API), and Target practice rounds (TP)
-TP rounds carry a 1.5 POUND steel slug, muzzle velocity is 3400 feet/sec
-API rounds can pierce up to 4 inches of heavy armor plating and muzzle velocity is 3200 feet/sec
-HEI's explode on impact and are used to start fires or destroy light armored vehicles, 3300 feet/sec

ok...now THAT is the coolest gun on earth :)

some pics:

Drawing of the Avenger
7 barrels of fun...more fun than a barrel of monkeys
Letting it loose
Explosive rounds!!!!!!
Bigass bullets!

Glock, hands down, the best of the best. Nice grip, etc, etc. Used to think the Colt 1911, but just too damn big.

The Calico M-950 is an interesting duck . . . a 9mm submachine gun with a 100-round magazine.

The Steyr AUG is cool, as is the ACR (fires flechettes rather than 5.56). H&K G3 . . . H&K HK91 . . . IMI Galil . . .
