This is more of a 4 slot cooler as you're not going to want to have anything right in front of the fans. At that point, I wonder why they didn't just do a setup of placing two or three 80mm fans vertical, one at the front of the card and the other near the vents so that it really gets the air out of the case.

Actually, I hope that with the move to onboard GPUs they can drop the display connectors (or make it a daughter card you can buy separately, which would help as then you could buy the one that had the connectors you want/need without needing to get an entirely different video card), so that you'd have another slot that is venting.
 
You got it all wrong. GTX 580 buyers are not looking for the value play.

I understand. It's still interesting to see that Zotac has a GTX480 with the identical cooler as that GTX580 but the former card costs $290 vs. $560 for the latter. This means that the target market for a GTX580 is almost completely price inelastic 🙂
