Triple slot cooler, 3 gigs of vram, runs cooler, faster, and quieter than a refernce gtx580, and consumes essentially the same power.

Nice.

With the latest drivers from both camps, NV's 580 is looking worse and worse. ~$200 more expensive than a 6970 with barely a performance difference. 3GB of VRAM appears to be doing nothing for the 580 as its already texture fill-rate limited.

^ Ouch. A $330 videocard is outperforming a $550 card.

f12560.png

^ Ah, yes, 1 fps faster for another $200+. Where do I sign up?

civvleader.png

^ Losing again...

civvlgv.png

^ Finally, NV's superior Tessellation performance in full force.

bc2a.png

^ The first convincing win, but still can't crack 60 fps. Compared to HD6870 CF / 560 SLI / HD6950 CF, for $500+, it is still looking awfully overpriced.

m2033veryhigh.png

^ 2 fps faster for an extra $200. E-peen FTW!!

avp2560.png

^ Oh, how I love my 2 fps gains for $200 more.

^ Oh yes, can't forget 18 Watts higher power consumption at idle and 67 more Watts at load. Chuck another win for the 580, where higher numbers are better. Oops?

But will the GTX580 be 2 fps faster in BF3 6 months from now? I hope so!! :)

I still find nVidia's SLI implementation to be better than ATI/AMD's Crossfire implementation. From the software level that is. AMD does not and will not offer a way to create custom profiles. nVidia does. The 3rd party profile tool for Crossfire also does not work smoothly. It still attempts renaming executables in real time in order to trick the drivers to load certain profiles. Plus, you need to have it running in the background. AMD is also slower in creating predefined profiles. nVidia also updates profiles for older games where AMD likely won't. It's for these reasons I went back to nVidia.

couple things that I don't care for...

1. its not a blower design, so why have a traditional blower-oriented bracket with the extra space for exhaust? I'd much rather have the extra space oriented for more output plugs, instead all we get are two DVI ports and what is that, HDMI? mini DP? My triple slot ASUS DCII GTX580 has two DVI ports and a full size HDMI and DisplayPort

2. is that just an 8 and a 6 pin PCI-e power, why not two 8s? I realize it probably doesn't need two 8s, but this thing seems built for overclocking yet they already hinder that ability...

3. while a 3GB buffer sounds good, the 1.5GB of the average GTX580 is more than enough for any single display, making a 3GB model practical only for multiple-display setups, which just about require 2 or more likely 3 GPUs to power, something a 3-slot cooler simply doesn't make sense for.

I bought a 580 for nvidia 3d, overclocking ability, better drivers (IMO), and there's always a premium on the fastest single gpu. You also only show graphs for 2560x1600p where GTX 580's advantage is shown in the worst possible light.

I'd also like to add I'm happy with my purchase and if they made a little money and continue to build kick ass gpu's then more power to em.

You mad there bro? Would it have made you feel less upset if they threw in Hawx 2, Lost Planet 2, and Crysis 2?

That's a valid reason. NV's 3D is definitely superior to AMD's implementation.

Fair enough, but also for a $500+ GPU, shouldn't it be able to handle higher loads better than a $300 card? Given that GTX580 doesn't do as well once you increase the load, that likely means for future games its performance advantage (which the 580 currently has over the 6970 at 1080P) will shrink as texture resolution is increased.

better drivers (IMO)

Let's wait until NV fixes their OpenGL performance by the time Rage ships.

I wouldn't be upset. I fully expect NV to win in those games considering the first 2 use Tessellation, the implimentation of which is currently superior on NV's GPUs, and Crysis 2 for which Crytek received $2M from NV.

Was there ever a valid confirmation besides kitguru of that claim? And is this just going to be another example of Metro2033 - where AMD fans cry about how the game is obviously optimized for Nvidia cards until AMD releases new cards and/or drivers which give it near equal performance?

Agreed on not being sure about the 3GB of VRAM, you only need it for surround and while these cards would be very nice in SLI, these are triple-slot cards...niche indeed.

Still, no one who cares about price/performance buys 580s. If you want cool and quiet though, this card is looking pretty sweet.

You are probably right. If you want the absolutely fastest single GPU card, the 580 is the one to get. But it costs $200 extra for another 3-5% performance increase over the 6970. I suppose those same buyers will pull the trigger on the GTX680 the day it comes out.

Not I. I'll be picking up two 7970s on release day. Unless NV can manage to give a 100% confirmed hard release date within a couple weeks of the new Radeon 7000 series launch day.

that's not an excuse for 3GB of ram though, there are 1.5GB triple slot GTX580s that have just as good thermal and noise characteristics

I'm not against the merits of the GTX580, I actually own one, but given all of its relatively conflicting features, this particular card doesn't really seem to have a place except to take extra money away from chumps

3 slots
Gigabyte GTX 580 GV-N580SO-15I is better~2 slots+3 fans:sneaky:

but its not better, it has less heatsink material to dissipate the heat, the extra fan will only add noise

granted, that's not to say its not a better option for most

So there was never factual evidence from reputable sources stating that Nvidia gave Crytek $2 million dollars?

i think nvidia gave Crytek $2 million dollars to produce a nvidia friendly game, and then more to hamper AMD driver optimizations.

Yup, but it doesn't take away at how awful the price/performance on any 580 is.

Newegg has Zotac GTX480 for $290 with the same aftermarket cooler as the Zotac 580 in this thread. Not bad considering this card cost $499 about 12 months ago.

The 580 is only about 15% faster than the 480. So if you want a quiet NV setup, those 2x Zotac 480s are not much more expensive than a single 580 if you have the PSU to handle it.

You got it all wrong. GTX 580 buyers are not looking for the value play. I had a GTX 460 1gb before I bought a 580. Could of got another 460 for $140-ish and sli'ed for GTX 580 performance. I wanted the fastest single card I could get. Period. I didn't analyse charts for hours on end. Of course there were better buys for the money. The 580 obviously isn't going to get the bang for the buck award.
