That was Bob Hoover. His is one hell of a story, beginning with testing out the delivered aircraft before the aircrews took them in World War 2. He was said to have demonstrated the single engine performance of the P-38 on a few occasions, performing low level aerobatics on one engine.
I've seen his Aero Commander performance on Commencement Bay. It is bizzare to see a plane pass by at high speed with both engines feathered, just a whoosh! noise.

 
He didn't break the sound barrier; the dude who posted that description comment under the myspace vid was a moran.
