Consumers see fewer differences among car brands

I've been saying this for years. The cars in most mainstream segments are virtually the same. Same size, same features for the money. They benchmark each other for a reason. The cars that are "outliers" in one way or another typically don't sell well. See: virtually every Jetta and Passat made until the current gen.

Nissan and Honda have been extremely stagnant lately. Their current models are generally worse than previous models.

Toyota isn't bad, but with Ford reliability and build quality going up they need to decide whether to compete with Ford over the 'refined' economy car segment or continue going all-out cheap

not me, i would only buy Honda, Toyota, Nissan. It would have to be a 50% mark down for me to get a Ford.

Troll, troll, troll your boat back to the OT... Merrily, Merrily, Merrily, troll is just a dream.

Don't feed the toll, folks. Let this thread die.

Trolling will NOT be tolerated in the garage any longer.
Consider this your ONE warning. Think it's a troll post, use the report post button, not "vigilante justice".

Unfortunately trolling has spread to the garage which is a shame and is clearly not able to be controlled. I may need to rethink my participation in the forum.

Your post was more of a troll post than the op's.

IGNORE if you have nothing good to say. Use the report post button, if we think there is merit in the complaint, we'll address it.

This is my last post in here, and it should be yours as well.
Keep this on topic.

i wasn't trolling, Vic. Found an interesting link and decided to share it with you guys. i just prefer foreign over domestic, that is all. please don't leave, just participate more actively.

i thought the amount of imagination for new cars stagnated in about the early 90s for most of the major car companies. now, you have to look for the logo to tell what kind of car it is. i miss the old days of being able to tell when a certain type of car was coming up behind you on the road. sure, there are still some deviates on the road, but the mass marketed cars are pretty much the same thing across a bunch of different companies.

I would never buy a particular car based on the image of the entire brand. Seems very silly as a consumer to have that mentality.

Hmm... And yet it's the #1 goal of automotive marketing.

In fact, it's the #1 goal of most marketing, and it's remarkably effective.

Just look at how well Hyundai is doing in the us right now. To a layman whats the difference between a new civic and a new Kia or other import?

With domestic cars sharing platforms with european cars a certain amount of parity is happening in the auto industry when it comes to styling and basic performance.

I drove past a Kia recently and my wife said boy those new hondas are kinda ugly.

^ i'm very pleased with the design route that kia and hyundai took. i would not be embarrassed to drive a new elantra.

I test drove a Corolla a couple years ago when my wife was looking for a new car. Ugh, what a POS. They may be reliable, but what horrible little cars. I'll give up a little reliability for some creature comforts. If I wanted strictly utilitarian I'd take the bus.

I completely agree. I could not stand the Corolla. The Camry also just felt like a 60 year-old's car to me.

From my past negative experiences with cars, I will never buy another Dodge, Honda, or Nissan product. The last 5 vehicles I have owned have been BMWs and Fords, and would buy more of the same in the future.

Let the sheeple buy what marketing tells them, and the rest of us can choose based on merit and/or need.

It's like folks who say 'GM sucks'. Sure, the HHR is crappy, but the CTS-V kicks some serious a$$.

OP - Toyota and Honda are boring and devoid of any style these days, I would not buy any of those. Nissan, though, I do like. 🙂

Yeah, I think that the Japanese makers have really stagnated lately and this is contributing to consumer malaise. I bought my Altima in 2002 when they did the big refresh. It looked new, refreshing and exciting. I was thinking about getting a new car this past summer and went by the Nissan dealership just to get a baseline. The Altima felt practically like the same thing. A few changes to the styling, added the CVT and push button start. :| The Corolla was even worse. Very low end in features and packages and I still couldn't really feel like it had advanced from when I test drove it 10 years ago. Compare that to what Ford did with the Focus and Fusion and Chrysler with the Cruze. They're the only two manufacturers that have me excited and interested.

Corolla is a despicable little car from a driving perspective. I guess most people don't care, though, hundreds of thousands/year who buy them.
