It doesn't seem like MSRP was increased at all at Newegg. Only that the discounts over MSRP have disappeared, so now drives are at MSRP. Wake me up if they ever go up in price over MSRP, then I'll be concerned.

The reason this story is news is not the sale of large upgrade drives to people like us, but the shortage of smaller drives for big system builders like Dell etc who cannot easily raise prices, or build systems without drives, so if they reduce production by 30% for several months that ripples down the supply chain reducing income, and that is news.

Other than reduced profits for all the system suppliers, a likely consequence is that ALL of the non drive parts for systems will drop in price as supply greatly exceeds demand.

Darn, ordered a Seagate 2TB OEM from NCIX 59.99 shipped late Sept. Now it's $93.35.

Drive is made in China, not sure why the Thailand floods affects the price. 🙁

China is WD's largest site for manufacturing its products, Thailand comes second.
Remember to that much of those shortages also caused by raw material suppliers within the local region that is also impacted by flood.
I read from some other forum prices will continue to rise as early as Monday.
The 2 to 3tb high capacity drive prices have jumped at least 20-30% on the Egg site as last check.

To true. I also remember when DDR2 prices were nutty. Come to find out it was because the big memory company's were price fixing the market. They got a huge fine and prices dropped way, way down. So HD makers may do something to get the same results. Basically put artificial shortages or something to raise ASP's.

Artificial shortages are commonplace.

There are warehouses full of diamonds. They are so plentiful, it's not even funny, but we are told that they are rare and we better get one for our girlfriends or else we don't love them, yadda yadda. Same goes for a myriad other industries.

The floods may very well be causing a shortage, but with all the lies we are told to get higher prices, I take it and everything else they tell us with a grain of salt.

EDIT: Holy! 10 hours later it has gone up another $15 or $184 plus shipping.

Heads up, Microcenter still has the 2TB Greens for $79.99 (argh I missed them for $69.99 2 weekends ago) until the 30th or 31st, limit of 2 per person though.

Replacing a couple of F4's not playing nice with my WHS...though I should hold onto them since they are like gold now!
