While I hope the Olympics will in some way benefit the Chinese people, I am disgusted that such a Human Rights abusing government won... :|

Here's an unpopular opinion:

I think China won as a giant "Fck U" to America. A lot of people/countries have a real jealousy and resentment of America and likely many voters thought that giving the Olympics to China would really "get the goat" of the Americans...

Just my opinion and it may be wrong.

or it could be that the international community would like to see human rights reforms in China. 7 years is a long time and maybe this will pressure them into change.

Dude, what are you talking about? The US just had the Olympics in Atlanta and I believe they're coming back to the US in Salt Lake City... If anything, that's not right.

Hopefully, this will force china into some human rights reform. if not, this is gonna make the IOC look even worse.

This is the way I prefer to see things. Instead of isolating China I think it's better to "open things up". I think that by hosting the Olympics, it will actually speed up human rights reform in China. The main thing is that China resents "being told how to do things by the US" so that isolating them will probably slow down reforms (Chinese government can be real stubborn).

I feel the same with Cuba. All these years of isolating them have done nothing to improve that country for the people that live there.

An unpopular opinion, but sadly it may be true. I haven't really followed the debate and progress of the whole process, but I think that the IOC should take human rights issues into account far more than they are. But I prefer to be an optimist. China has a shoking human rights record and I hope that the Olympics will help reduce these violations and open up the governments internal processes for the sake of the people in China.

The IOC needs to be cleaned up. I watched a documentary about them and they sounded quite corrupt. A lot of back hand favours for the boys.

It sure worked on Germany in 1936. They stopped their human rights abuses almost immediately thereafter.

rudder: I really hope you are right - honestly. :)

Techwhore: no, no - its not that they can stop the US getting the Olympics, its just that I suspect there was a good percentage that enjoyed thinking that giving the Olympics to China (especially soon after the plane fiasco) would cheese off America...

Again, it may be a crazy opinon, but its been occuring to me more and more lately.

Then again, I get hit in the head with hockey pucks for fun so who knows... ;) :D

I sure hope they can improve the air quality more by the time 2008 comes around, I came to china for summer for the last 3 yrs in a row and had to go through Beijing to get to another city, but

1.) when the plane is landing even on a sunny day, you fly through a black/gray layer of smog

2.)you can notice a great change in the atmosphere right when you get out of the airport, it just feels alot heavier and thicker. And everytime I go back I get a sense of relief from good ole american air

haha. ticket fees will range from $500-1000, and will require an overnight stay in jail at an additional cost of $235. Continental breakfast available for a fee, gratuity not included.

I don't think they should have gotten it. They need to clean their act up on many levels. This was a sucker vote because of promising economical ties for the future. I think this decision is complete Bull Sheeet! :|

Huh? You are deluded my friend. China won because of politics partially, but they in fact DID have a good bid. I personally think it's not as good as the Toronto bid, but nonetheless it is an excellent bid. No, in fact the Beijing games is a big boon to the US. I'm sure many of the US delegates voted for China. Why? Because it opens up the possibility of an American summer games in 2012. Several Americans have already stated this publicly. In fact the head of the Salt Lake City games has gone on record as officially supporting the Beijing bid. You might not like it, but many of the powers that be in the US were rallying directly AGAINST Toronto, and FOR Beijing.

I personally think we should use this as an excuse to bomb China... it'll be fun.... and they have people to spare... :)

Being Sarcastic of course... but seriously... f--- china... their human rights violations are apalling... the lack of freedom in china is apalling... the use of child labor in China is appalling... I'd almost rather the olympics be hosted in Afganistan... I think this is yet another sign of the growing hostility towards the United States.

AND YES I'm going to point the finger at Boy George. Not that it's his fault... but he doesnt have the ability to keep it at bay. His diplomatic effectiveness isn't even on the scale.. he's had 0 influence internationally thus far... and I don't see it improving in the future. He and his cronies think that they can maintain world power by threat of military force alone. Clinton had the good sense to maintain solid relations all around the world, even if it meant yes cow towing in some situations. You know what they say... pride comes before the fall. F-CK CHINA!... and F-CK BUSH....

Hey! I live in Atlanta....it's not our fault that public transport sucks, and the smog, and the traffic, and major corruption of public officials contributing to the overall mayhem, and.....er...OK maybe they did kinda suck, but it was fun being here while it was going on.;)

As for China. I am very disappointed that a country that routinely squashes the rights of its citizens (I won't even go into Tibet) was awarded the games. Everything will be roses during the games with the foreign media around and then they'll go right back to crushing "uprisings" (yeah, peaceful groups like Falun Gong are really a threat...). They will never change as long as they are being constantly rewarded despite their heinous human rights record. And shame on the IOC for buying into all the bullsh!t propaganda the party has been spewing about what great hosts they will be for the games.

Anyone wanna start a betting pool as to how many 'roided up female swimmers are gonna get tossed this time around?
