guru3d is a great forum. I was digging around for the link, but my wireless connection has been in and out all night. wasn't having much luck getting past the main page. I thought maybe the forum was down.
that's where I found out about the FX mod (before that, only up to the GF4 4600 was moddable...I still have my old desktop running a softquadro'd 4200>700xgl) Unwinder is a mod there, he wrote rivatuner and the softquadro patch scripts...smart guy, pay attention to any of his posts.
heck, you could softquadro your 4600 to a 900xgl if you wanted to play around with it.
anyway, if you want to try it, scan through that sticky'd thread in the rivatuner forum on guru3d. someone named bluefire or bluesmoke (or something like that) gives complete instructions for the 5900 ultra>FX3000 mod using the 45.28 drivers. (coincidentally, that happens to be alias' recomended driver for maya...) Those instructions work for ~90% of people I've talked to/helped...and I'm fairly certain the people it doesn't work for have some no name card that's been flashed from 5900 se to 5950 ultra, then softmodded...though apparently that works for some people as well.
and just softmodding, you can't hurt your card as far as I know. worst case you get crashes in openGL apps and you have to uninstall the hacked drivers. It gets risky when you start hardmodding resistors and trying to flash to a FX3000 bios. last time I checked guru3d (some time ago, deadlines, sigh...), a couple people were still trying to get that to work...now THAT would be great to get working, then we could use the card as a quadro under linux (but kill the gaming install option)
oh, dubb comes from it's audio useage...sound recording, live audio. dubbing cassettes from dat masters for clients. Us multimedia folks wear lots of hats (or used to, at least)
feel free to PM if you have any trouble/questions
