He didn't abdicate and nothing has happened geopolitically so I would say your "leak" was mostly wrong.

You found out Abdullah was going to no longer be king a week before it happened. Not totally right, but I challenge anybody else here to bring a geopolitically significant leak that ends up being legit.

I will edit it tomorrow morning ugh I should not have eaten all these gummy strips. Goodnight.

A shamelessly pilfered comment from reddit that explains the issue of Saudi succession pretty well:

Crown Prince Salman will likely be the next up. But again he is no spring chicken, he is 79, and is believed to have Alzheimers and Dementia for years now. He has also had a stroke, leading to his left arm not working well.
Only remaining sons interested in the job is Prince Talal and Muqrin, but Talal has angered most the Saudi family and Muqrin is the son of a concubine (something most Princes won't allow).
After those two, its the hundreds of grandsons and the real Game of Thrones.

So it's entirely possible Saudi Arabia implodes... just in time for ISIS?

Maybe their military will keep the peace and give no !@#$s about who is next in line.

It's potentially a massive game changer. Whomever sits on the Saudi throne has nearly absolute power. He can have people executed or change foreign policy on a whim, as long as he doesn't upset the religious clerks.

If Salman decides he wants to stop being two faced about the whole Religious extremism issue it could go either way, he could give all authority to the clerks, who will no doubt steer the country on an even more insane salafist direction, or he could have any clerks that preaches extremism put to death and wipe it out overnight.

Which is the ultimatum the US should have delivered to the House of Saud on 9/12. Too bad Bush put the family business ahead of the national interest.

I am no expert on the house of saud, but I can tell you that this is 1) not good for us and 2) good for Isis. This is crazy!

Edit: Sad day for the 40 kids and 10 wives he leaves behind!

Why? Nothings going to change in Saudi Arabia just because they changed kings. Its all the same inbred bedoin family.

How many Saudi women could drive during Abdulla's reign? None, and they must have a "guardian" with them at all times.

Are you gay in Saudi Arabia? Prepare for whipping, flogging, castration, torture, vigilante execution, or death.

I was watching foreign news this morning, and a Middle East 'expert' was being interviewed about Abdullah's reign. He said that due to the King's human rights record, terrorism was not fought, it was cultivated.

I still can't believe we cozy up to a country that puts homosexuals to death. I guess we need to retain the right to drive thirsty vehicles though :colbert:.

We do NOT cozy up to a country that puts homosexuals to death. We cozy up to a country with buttloads of cheap oil which, um, happens to put homosexuals to death. That's completely different . . . somehow.

Even more sad, with the notable exceptions of Israel and Jordan this is the sanest country in the area. At least now that Lebanon has been overrun and Islamicized.

Saudi Arabia is the source of the insanity. The Saudis fund the religious schools cranking out the nutjobs around the globe.

That's true, and I suspect those two things are connected. Finance the hard core Islamist/Salafist schools in other nations and draw your own crazies to those countries.

If by "sane" you mean "willing to bow to US pressure and leave Israel alone" then yeah Jordan and Saudi Arabia are "sane".

Lebanon is 100x more liberal and similar to the U.S. Than SA. You are being an idiot.

This is a country that publicly beheads people, dismembers people, stones people. None of that EVER has been OK in Lebanon.

What the fuck are you talking about? Saudi Arabia is sane? You are out of your mind. Israel are criminals and the "sane" thing to do is to fight them, like Egypt, until they give in. That's what Hezbollah does.

You need to understand that Saudi Arabia is the home of 15/19 hijackers (76% of them) despite being a fairly small country. It is THE SOURCE for Islamic extremism.

Problem is, Israel is happy to keep the Salafists in power because it helps their "poor me" narrative they use to distract from various atrocities too many to name. Israel has no beef with ISIS. They are buddies, and it won't be long until Obama puts his foot down on Bibi's bullshit.

Every time I press the accelerator in my car it feels like I'm supporting a government that wantonly murders people I identify with, and that's exactly what's happening. It's a weird feeling.

But it's certainly not just for the gays:
