*CONFIRMED* gas shortages in NC, SC, FL, elsewhere in southeast

no word of shortage here but it was funny to see the lines at one intersection... 2 gas stations at opposite corners of each other... one with $2.85 and the other at $3.25. Guess which side had the lines of cars and which was COMPLETELY empty of cars?

This is insane. I went to fill up yesterday and they jacked up gas prices about $0.60 in some places in Northern NJ. It was $2.75 the day before yesterday and when I went to fill up most places were $3 and change. One place was charging $3.59. I knew I should have filled up this weekend.

I live in the NW suburbs of Chicago.
Gas here went from $2.80 - $2.89 up to $3.10 at some spots and $3.35 in others. Strange, but Shell is selling it for $3.10, while Speedway is selling it for $3.35. 2 days ago Speedway was selling it for $2.80 while the Shell station was in the $2.90 range.

Most of the gasoline used in NC and SC comes through a minimal number of pipelines that originate in the Gulf. Because the electricity is down for some of the pipeline and because the refineries are down because of damage/water, the flow of gas is interrupted.

Reportedly one of the pipelines may start coming back online this weekend.

Are you talking about gasoline or natural gas?

There are a few places running low or out completely here in Atlanta.

I was laughing my ass off riding in this morning watching people put $5 per gallon gas in their Yukons.

OK, lets set this right.

1) Drudge, et al, note that the east coast gasoline pipelines are down because of power loss through LA, MS. There is a 10 day supply in most areas, but power should be restored (report this morning is that they were now to 25% capacity on the flow rate).

2) Some Asshat starts a rumour that the stations will be closing at 3pm because they are out of gas. This quickly spreads and the less than intelligent journalism majors on the local radio stations repeat it.

3) Everyone without a clue piles into their cars to fill their tanks before the stations close. This spike in demand actually creates a shortage at the stations.

4) The stations raise their prices in anticipation of their wholesale price and cost going up (and some are asshats).

5) The government decides to really screw it up and artificially set gas prices by going after 'gougers'.

Lessons - people are idiots. "Gouging" actually helps prevent supply shocks and is not gouging, it is free-market correction and should be allowed (so those idiots that were filling a cooler (yes, like you put beer in) would at least think twice - filling a cooler should be $20/gallon) as higher prices prevent stronger supply shocks and reduce unnecessary demand. If fact, "gouging" is the only thing that will prevent this from becoming a real shortage. Painful for those that need it, but blame it on the asshat with a couple of coolers of gas in his basement for it.

Rumours and asshats have actually created a temporary shortage until the supply can reach the stations, but the prices are going to remain high in the interim because all this "shortage" has pushed the gas futures up (I hate freaking speculators and futures traders as they are moronic sheep too.)

Oh, I knew there was going to be a supply shock, but did not anticipate the freaking idiots. I told my wife to fill her car yesterday morning as I expected the price to go up to $2.70 or so. But then some idiots start rumours that we are out of gas... :|

My wife and I are going to Atlanta this weekend. Hopefully by then things are more normal or we'll be stuck there! 😀

Well we're in the Grand Hyatt in Buckhead for Saturday and Sunday night. After that, who knows? 😀

Yesterday people all over my work were saying how several nearby gas stations were "out of gas".. Funny when I drove down Woodruff road, all of those "dry stations" all of a sudden had lines 20 cars deep filling up for $2.99+ a gallon for regular...

BJ's was still selling it at $2.53/gallon for regular and $2.70/gallon for premium.

Nice. What's the occasion?

No real occasion. It's just the first weekend I've managed to get off in months and we decided to just get away for the weekend. We're going to Six Flags on Saturday and then Sunday and Monday AM are up in the air.

The only reason we're in the Grand Hyatt is because Priceline got us the rooms for 1/4 the regular rate. 😀

Braves are hosting Cicny this weekend, you should go grab a game. Weather's supposed to be quite nice.

If it were the Yankees Amanda would be into it but other than that I doubt it. She's not a big Braves fan.

Update #3, no gas in Clemson, SC!

All the commuter students are using public transportation system and carpooling.

We recently stayed at the same hotel through Priceline as well. Awesome!

Edit - Aves,

As for gas, as of this morning at my exit, it was under $3 and they had it. So getting here should not be a problem... But then again, you are coming from the other side of the state (I live in Suwanee at 2 o'clock on the Atlanta map).
