<< full name, mailing address, city and state, zip, ph. #, soc. sec. # (that is optional Matthew It is to help me identify you - as you, when that time comes), and your D.O.B. That should do it! >>

You have got to be kidding me, don't ever give someone who is a virtual stranger this type of information. At the very least I'd ignore, but if you want to be more proactive then try turning it over to the cops or FBI so they can investigate it as a scam.
>>

How would I go about doing this? I always had a weird feeling about this guy, he very well may be on the cops crazy list.

Either call or go into the police station, I'm a fan of in-person, but some people are more comfortable on the phone. Take a copy of the email with you, and just describe the situation as you have here.

While reading this, I could see the bullsh** piling up. I was waiting to see it mention your social security #. Even though he doesn't say you have to give him the SS#, this is obviously a scam, and the email was written by the same lunatic who came to your store. Don't reply.

I don't know whether to report this to the authorities or not. I knew SOMETHING was fishy as no normal person puts a freakin WalMart employee in their will for mixing paint. (i didn't even physically mix the paint! :Q)

ugh. what a stupid situation.

<< Big deal, an address... Not like there isn't a sh(i)tload of companies out there that don't already have it, and continually send you junk mail. Hell, if you're that paranoid, just set up a PO box. >>

Uhhhh this guy is an actual human being. It's bad enough he knows where murphy55d works. At least that's a public place where there's likely to be people around.
Your home address? Uhhh....that's where I LIVE. Junk mail I can throw in the trash.
A psycho rapist with a gun and a crowbar is much harder to remove once he's found his way onto my front door.

<< And to all you people claiming scam, aren't you even just a little bit curious? Why not have some fun with this guy? You're calling all the shots, are you not? >>

No, you're calling THIS shot. WHo knows what the next step might be. The "fun" you have with this guy could cost thousands of dollars or even your life.
Is it worth it?

Man, you're no fun... turning this all logical and stuff... 😉

I still see no harm in asking for a official letter from the law firm, though. Have it sent to the Wal-Mart, like Optimus said... no worries, mate!

The others are right, this is bullsh!t.
He is probably some really manipulative gay guy--these guys are real good with spinning webs and bs, especially acting like they care.
My nephew got caught up in something like this, and in the end was almost this guy's slave. The further you go, the deeper it gets and the harder it is to "get out".
The only way to stop this guy is to say "no thanks", and stick to it. He'll want an explanation; don't give it. If he persists, suggest you will contact the police. Seriously.

No kidding. There were NO INTENTIONS of me EVER giving this nut any more information than he knows, which is a FIRST NAME and a junk email address. Heck, there's even another Matt at WalMart overnight, so that's not even that much info.

ATLien if you want to be put into his will, I'll gladly give you his email and you can deal with him.

Yeh, if you decide to pursue it, this might not be a bad way to go about it....he already knows where it is.
I'd just be waaaay to scared the "Crocodile Hunter" wants to go "bushwacking in the outback" hahahaha

Yikes! :Q :Q :Q :Q

Scam. If nothing else, wills are not "certified" prior to death, and "Federal Court" has nothing to do with it: it's a state's affair. :disgust:

<< no worries, mate! >>

hmm...you're awfully eager for him to go through with contacting this guy. Now you use some Aussie slang....wait a minute!

😉

murphy:

Here is what I would do in your shoes:

1) Call the police and ask for the person or department that handles scams. Tell them you want to report a suspicious person and probable scam. Have the email, a description of the person, and any other relevant info ready.

2) Report all of this to your store manager - including times this dude was in, other employees who dealt with him, etc. Show your manager a print out of the email too.

WHATEVER I DID, I WOULD MAKE SURE THAT THIS PERSON GOT NO MORE INFO ABOUT ME.

If your manager knows, then he/she is less likely to be conned into giving out info to an Australian male, aren't they?

Damn... foiled again!

Seriously, though, a search for "Matthew Chatelain" in the Colorado Bar Assocation's member database comes up empty. Coincidence?

good advice. I will do that.

thanks guys for all the input. 🙂

this is really really weird. What was the e-mail address of the "lawyer"? Maybe you can poke around in the e-mail's header and find the originating IP. I did so once with a Hotmail account -- who woulda thunk that Hotmail puts the IP in the header? Anyway, this lawyer is supposedly in Colorado. If you can find the IP, you can find out an approximate geographic location for the guy. If it was sent from Pennsylvania, you know it's a scam and the "Aussie" sent it. If it's from Colorado, you should look further into it by, as others have suggested, having him send the stuff, on firm letterhead, to your Wal-Mart.

Here's what was in the header:

Return-Path: <mattchatel_cwr@hotmail.com>

Received: from f16.law14.hotmail.com (EHLO hotmail.com) (64.4.21.16) by mta466.mail.yahoo.com with SMTP; 26 Mar 2002 17:05:37 -0800 (PST)

Received: from mail pickup service by hotmail.com with Microsoft SMTPSVC; Tue, 26 Mar 2002 17:05:37 -0800

Received: from 209.158.4.237 by lw14fd.law14.hotmail.msn.com with HTTP; Wed, 27 Mar 2002 01:05:37 GMT

i dont know what to do with any of that. 😱

<< 209.158.4.237 >>

This is the IP from which the email was entered into hotmail.

I looked up this IP and found that it's DNS is:

client4-237.aasdcat.com

Went to www.aasdcat.com, look at the physical address:

Altoona Area School District
1415 Sixth Avenue, Altoona, PA 16602

So this email was sent from PA. It's a scam.

<< WHATEVER I DID, I WOULD MAKE SURE THAT THIS PERSON GOT NO MORE INFO ABOUT ME. >>

Run! Don't walk from this one. The options are either Psycho or Scammer either way it will bring you no good.

I was just about to post that. I checked out 209.158.4.237 and it was AASDCAT which I knew right away to be the Altoona Area School District's servers or whatever.

Well looks like I will be informing the cops about this nut.

Thanks everyone for all the help.

Just got off the phone with the officer in charge of scams and such....

He says at this point, there is nothing the police can do, as he has not committed a criminal offense. What I need to do is talk to my store manager, let him know what is going on, how this guy is trying to solicit me/others/whoever, and if he is in there again, file a possible trespassing order, or something like that. But right now, until he actually does something, it is not a criminal matter.

Wow. This is an interesting little story here.

You must keep us updated, and change the title of the thread so it sticks out more to those of us that have read it
