If the r600 is faster at all, there will come situations where it is 40% faster - but that don't make it right. Just because the G80 only uses a bit more power than the r580 at load (quite a bit more at idle), doesn't make it more efficient. My point was all of these companies have work to do here. Even vista idles at slightly higher consumption. This is insane - we should be reducing usage. Am personally thinking that maybe should just get a ps3 or xbox360 - and a quiet, efficient multimedia machine.

Well you have to take into consideration that you cannot simply compare the power requirements of a D3D10 gpu with these of aD3D9 gpu.. A D3D10 due to its architectural structure and move towards what we can call a GPGPU is logically consuming more power at idle.. The introduction of geometry shader in the unified shader technology does make the difference.. Geometry units cannot stay idle. This means that the gpu is considered to be in idle mode, but actually it is in a "hybrid" mode, a state between 2d/3d actually.. Thus we see higher idle power output..But you are right..Both companies must give us lower power and more efficient gpus..
As for the XBOX360 (because I have one), yes it's a good alternative for the time being.. But nowhere near efficient for what it provides and most importantly not quieter.. :p

LMAO, I remember when people thought the X850 consumed too much power. Screw ATi, either they'll fall after this release and become a niche market, or they'll learn from this mistake. Either way, I'm not buying that.

only benchmarks will tell
I'll believe it when I see it on AnandTech.

well, '300' came from ati documentation (intended for system integrators). as such, you might be right as it would hardly be the first time "requirements" were a bit inflated.. still, even 250w @ full load is scary.

tho to be fair, my 8800's "idle" usage is scary as well. while g80's power usage in 3d is okay (and certainly much better than what we're hearing about r600), i'm surprised more of an issue hasn't been made of this.

Thats Battlefield: Bad Company and its only a trailer as i barley downloaded it yesterday on my xbox 360. Where are you seeing GoW on the page?

Yep, migrant farm workers, the mall Santa Claus, and the mall Easter bunny are buying Crossfire R600s for use during the off hours. They run so well with their Celeron system.

apoppin, you are wrong. Rollo was not this bad. He was rowing up Da Nile, but not using a cigarette boat.

Once again, you'd be surprised. Due to less technical knowledge and a higher overall gullibility level (easier for evil salespeople to win over and con), more highend equipment sales come from low-income earners than the middle classes who are more prudent with their spending. This is a phenomenom certainly not limited just to computer parts and you are only demonstrating a woeful ignorance of how society works if you think otherwise.

Not all countries poor classes are necessarily as bad off as the poor in the USA either, some countries treat all their citizens decently, not just the rich...

I hate to pick sides in this, but there is strong evidence to support this as truth. I have done some charity/documentary work on low income housing here in Chicago and I can tell you first-hand that I have been in some slums, but they have a flat screen TV or a notebook laying there.

Little food in the fridge, but they are renting a leather couch. Stuff that doesn't make sense to the middle class, but they have it.

where did the heck did this come from? Left field?

i never said Rollo was *that bad* ... he just screwed up by first hiding an affiliation, admitting he lied about it and then pissing off the mods in FI ... which sealed the deal.

in fact, i suggested thru others that he might return ... perma-bans don't mean sh..
... ask Dennilfloss. ;)
:Q

but he will have no part of that ... unless you "beg" him ... he is pretty proud.

No I would not. But, it has to be easily available and can be tangible to be what you are comparing it to. Hidden inside a computer is not a status symbol except to geekdom.

As for woeful ignorance, alas, you do not know me. Don't leap to conclusions. Your opinion would be incorrect.

You can't see camshafts, differentials, gearboxes etc hidden inside a car either. Does that mean that foolish young (and old) men don't buy them instead of lifes nessecities?
