Confederate/Rebel flag

It represents the (non-existent) Confederate States of America. Now, what that symbolizes is a lot of things. I'd say it represents states believing that they have more power than the federal government, although most southerners put it up as a symbol of pride in their heritage. I'm not sure how many of them like to consider racism in that heritage.

EDIT: I meant the first part in a joking manner.

Maybe you missed the "Today" part?

So it symbolizes a .gif icon on a tech forum?

Oh jeez... it's my reaction to a stupid question posed by people who eventually insist that the confederate flag represents some kind of states rights, damn the man, independence thing.

In american popular culture it represents slavery. Plain and simple. You can argue about what it means to you as an individual but in general it is a symbol of slavery and repression.

The question itself is troll bait. Hence the

It's a simple of southern pride, but the concept of southern pride is completely linked with racism. You can be proud of where you come from and not be racist, of course, but if you fly the confederate flag and talk about how the south is going to rise again, I will (and I think most of the country will) make the (probably correct) assumption that you are a racist.

So you couldnt have said that in the first place? And perhaps voted for the corresponding item rather than diluting the results?

Nope. I think the  icon is more than adequate in respone to this thread.

nothing to be proud of.
it was racism, continuation of slavery. sure the north did the right thing for the wrong reason but that doesn't make the souths idiocy something to be proud of.

you might as well pretend the swastika is just a symbol of german national pride.

agreed

I see it a lot at the Orange County Fair, usually along with Skin and Independent decals on raised F150 or Silverado trucks.

As others have said, it's nothing to be proud of. There is a history to it and it's borderline retarded to mask your latent racism by pretending it means just Southern pride.

I have heard from a few Southerners that some Southerners are still disgruntled at the Federal Government for the Civil War, that the Union unfairly forced its view upon the South. Is this true? It's ridiculous that some people have this attitude, but whatever - rationality and mechanization will beat down retarded traditionalism any day.

To borrow a line from Robin Williams, the confederate(no caps out of choice) flag stands for states' rights as much as the svastika is a Tibetan good luck charm.

seeing and talking with people who display them. I'd say it represents White Trash. Generally the people have no idea what it means or meant.

and we have a winner folks....

Most people falsely believe that it is a flag of the Confederate States themselves. What it is in actuality is a combination of the Confederate Battle Flag and the Confederate Naval flag. It never represented the Confederate States as the main flag (although it was part of but not the full flag).

I always considered southern pride and racism kind of mutually exclusive i.e. the same thing pretty much especially when concerning the confederate flag.
