I run mine 24/7. I have always been under the assumption that the shutting down and powering back up of the components is harder on the hardware than simply leaving on all the time.

Shut it down. leaving it running for no reason is about as logical as leaving your car running for no reason.

Unless its set to automatically Hibernate(assuming Hibernate works on ur pc) then the difference in power consumption is almost negligable. But then again if you have an SSD for the OS these days, boot time for those is probably negligable compaired to Hibernate waking.

Honestly IMO leaving any shit running 24/7 thats not in use is just irresponsibly ignorant these days.

I agree, you should turn it off if you are not using it.

Mine runs 24/7 crunching for BOINC but that is different.

If it don't want to shut off, fix it or shut it off with a power strip.

I leave mine running. Although with an SSD, there is no longer an argument that leaving it running extends the lifetime of the magnetic spinning HDs.

So perhaps it is wasteful. I also crunch though in the background. That's another reason for leaving it running.

This question gets asked every so often on pretty much every forum out there. There are probably an equal number of compelling arguments pro and con, so do whatever works best for you. However, as mentioned, during things like thunderstorms, it's a good idea to shut the unit down and unplug it to help prevent power surge related damage.

Why shut it off it just goes to sleep when you are not using it. You might just wear the button or the power supply out by turning it off and on all the time. Every time you turn the computer on all the drives spin up all at once and this may help to ware out the power supply or circuits on the motherboard.

Turn it off. You are just wasting power. There are components that wear out from being on 24/7 and there are components that wear out from being turned on and off all the time. Take your pick.

Turn if off if your not doing anything on the computer during the night.
If your running a server or something where it needs to be turned on, its not a problem to keep your computer on, but you will use more electricity being on 24/7.

Dont worry i notice my stupidity tolerance is wearing thin, and will probably retreat from this board befor it breaks but just gana point out - Talking about your computer as if its a 10yr old beater vehicle exposed to the elements going through harsh winter salt storms is moronic...

The on/off switch isnt going to break your computer .

Profanity and vulgar comments deleted.
