Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe
AMD FX-55
ULTRA X-Connect 500W
EVGA 6800 ultra x2
1024MB GeIL Ultra-X
Seagate 120GB 7200RPM Serial ATA 150 8MB
Creative Labs SB Audigy-2 ZS 7.1
Cooler Master - Wave Master Black
Windows XP home with SP2

The computer ran fine for a few weeks, however I now have a problem. The computer just turns off. This happens during gamming. Sometimes it happens within a few minutes and sometimes it takes much longer or not at all. NOTE: every time my computer has just turned off - it will also just turn off again somewhere during bootup. This happens everytime even if i wait several hours before rebooting.

So far it has only happened during gamming but I've played that game without problems for weeks. Until now that is. I believe the computer is failing under stress.

A set up Asus Probe:

Normal:
CPU temp: 48C
MB temp: 38C
CPU fan: 3924
Chipset fan: 8035
+12v: 11.712 (seen 11.5 also)
+5v: 5.026
+3.3v: 3.28
Vcore: 1.52 (seems to move a little - 1.504 shows at times.)

I recorded some history in asus probe and these are the last values before a turn off.

cpu: 58C
mb: 41C
CPU fan: 4821
Chipset: 7670
12v: 10.816
5v: 5.053
3.3v: 3.264
vcore: 1.504

The values are recorded every 30 secs.

I looked in the Bios during reboot and saw a 10.62 value for the 12v. As always after a turn off, the computer also shut off during reboot .

additional info: GPU core temp 63C - ambient temp 47C (normal desktop idle)

My guess is that the power supply is going bad. However, I'm close to a noob. What do you think is wrong and what should I do to confirm good/faulty parts?

12v: 10.816

That's waay below spec. 11.4v should be to LOWEST. So, looks like the PSU w/o a doubt to me.

That's a pretty strong rig, SLI and all. Get yourself a Fortron, Enermax etc.

The values obtained from the motherboard sensors are not usually terribly accurate. However, given the problems you're having, they do seem to indicate that there is cause for concern.

A reading of 10.8v is outside of the specification and, if accurate, could be causing your reboot problem.

If I were you, I would be inclined to RMA the PSU.

With my rig, and what I've read on the Ultra-X connect, I would replace the PS with a better brand. Any suggestions on what PS I should get would be helpful. I'm nervous. I don't want to fry my rig.

ocz powerstream, hope you have a strong case thing weighs twice what your current psu does.

Cooler Master - Wave Master case.

My computer just turned off reading these forums. looks like the problem is getting worse.

You might wanna check threads over in Cases and cooling or GH.

But with a class rig like that, I still say Fortron or Enermax. Another which appears of top-notch quality is PCP&C (or something similar).

Don't wish to mean to alarm you unneccessarily, but I'd pull that suspect PSU b4 something bad happens (like losing some of those sweet components).

Hope all goes well.

Well, that's a beast of a PSU. I can't imagine it not being more than sufficient for your needs. Looks like a total of 35amps on the two 12v rails

As for the two 12v rails vs. one, can't really comment there. Seems there's a big thread on it here. I'll try to find it and post a link for ya.

Might have a look in your mobo manual to see if PSU suggested spec's are discussed (I'm pretty sure the Enermax will more than qualify).

EDIT: Hey twigster Have a look HERE. You've got two Ultra's. Looks like to be safe you should stay away from from the dual rail PSU. Get a beefy single rail PSU.

The problem is not amperage or wattage on the power supply, it's the voltage dipping below 11v. The tolerance is +/- 5% and you're hitting a differentiation of around 15% or so...One of the reasons good PSU's are considered good is that even under load they have tight voltages across all their rails.

I'm still up in the air on dual or single rails.

Seems most peeps are. But from I can gather, both 6800U's are gonna draw off of ONE line. One line only has a max capacity of 18amps IIRC. The other line will feed the mobo/cpu. So, one line will be stresed, the other will have extra power. No way on a dual rail psu to get that "unused" amperage over to the stresed rail where its needed.

Because of that, I'm questioning the concept of the D.R. PSU's in general. I guess it would make more sense if you could adjust the amperage between rails. Ex. 35amps in total, put 20 on the gfx card side and 15 for the CPU (sounds like the 64bit cpu's don't need as much even as the Athlon XP line). But then why bother when a beefy single rail already does this?

Anyway, thats my .02 on it. There are a few threads here where the topic is really delved into. Surely some have done more reasearch on it and know more than I.

I decided not to go with a two 12v rail power supply. Ordered the pc power and cooling 510 sli. Thanks for all the help.

Hey man, that looks to be great choice! I have never, ever heard a discouraging word about pcp&c. Seems like they're the cream of crop. Will go very nicely with that rig.
