Computer Science has slowest computers, kind of ironic?

for our ap cs class we've got... p3-800's running win98. it may not be the greatest, but hey, they rarely crash. hello world still takes a good minute to compile on java tho :D

Probably twice as fast as those celeries we use.... they're somehwere between 400 and 500mhz...

A computer tech class that I took in high school used old 486's. Granted we just did fairly basic java but it was still pretty damn slow. The Doom deathmatches we had were kind of fun though.

Anyway, isn't it kind of ironic the rest of the school's departments, which each have their own computer lab, some have two, are all around 2Ghz+ even though its a celeron? Some are even like 2Ghz P4. I thought it was kind of ironic that in the English lab we have newer computers than in Computer Science. Not that we need new computers, but you'd expect the computer related classes to get some atleast comparable to the english lab.

Hehe, thats all. I'm going to talk to teacher about this and see if the classes can do a fundraiser or something because selling soft drinks and candy goes really fast and is an easy way to make money at my school!

Oh yeah, this is about High School...

I fail to see how a 1GB 500Mhz machine is slow to compile simple software?

When I was in highschool we did java programs in P1-200Mhz with 32mb ram (which was then upgraded to 64mb ram). Do you realize how slow that was?

Hell my personal computer (and fastest one in the house) is a P2-450 with 256mb ram and a riva tnt. And its just fine for me. The slow computer stops me from wasting time to play games now.

A 500Mhz is more than enouhg to compile C and java software (especially the type of ones you'd do in high school).

LOL I must be getting old.

In high school, the programming class (it sure as hell wasn't CS) was running 286 IBM PS/2s? Might even be the craptastic PS/1s, I can't recall exactly.

When I started CS at one of the top four schools in the country, the newest HP Apollo workstations clocked in at 66 MHz IIRC. Later on, Intel gifted a bunch of PPro 200 boxes, but those felt sluggish running Slowlaris x86. I'm pretty sure the HP workstations were still there 5 years later.

Seriously, for high school, anything over 333 MHz is going to be adequate. What I don't understand is why 500 MHz systems would only have 1 GB storage? If that's the case, that's why those PCs feel like doorstops. Celeron 400s have more than enough juice for high school CS. Even when I bought my P133, it already had a 1.6 GB hard drive.

Yeah, WTF is up with book fees? Isn't that what the taxes are for in the first place? Education up here is weird.

I think it's good preparation for the day when you, like me, will be working for one of the biggest companies in the world and still programming on a 500mhz P3 system.

EDIT: Forgot to mention, one of the guys in my group was upset to find that I have 256Mb of RAM as I'm the new guy and he only has 128Mb.
