Computer Science has slowest computers, kind of ironic?

Our Computer Science AP Class has these ancient 1GB 400-500mhz computers that take forever to do things with Windows 95, talk about old.

Anyway, isn't it kind of ironic the rest of the school's departments, which each have their own computer lab, some have two, are all around 2Ghz+ even though its a celeron? Some are even like 2Ghz P4. I thought it was kind of ironic that in the English lab we have newer computers than in Computer Science. Not that we need new computers, but you'd expect the computer related classes to get some atleast comparable to the english lab.

Hehe, thats all. I'm going to talk to teacher about this and see if the classes can do a fundraiser or something because selling soft drinks and candy goes really fast and is an easy way to make money at my school!

Oh yeah, this is about High School...

There is a reason why the public education system of Indiana is one of the worst in the nation.

Hehe, very true. I live in Carmel. I must say, its a pretty tough school and challenging to me, but they can be really stupid when it comes to some things...

Yeah, but it gets boring not learning new things and instead waiting on a compiler...

It wouldn't be worth it to upgrade them. I think I'm going to put together a price list of how much a computer would cost that is decent or something so it improves our usage.

lol. Atleast yours won't crash every 10 minutes. Honestly, I can't stand working on 95. Oh yeah, just to add to the pain, we have these crap 15 inch monitors literally 3 or 4 inches from our face and we go back much further because of where the keyboard is. I'm thinking that if I start a fundraiser, monitors are the first thing we buy, some cheap ar$ 15 inch LCD's.

my ap cs class had decent computers

but here in college the CS and ECE labs have pretty slow computers b/c we aren't doing that much with them honestly how much power do u need to spend 98% of your time writing a program and 2% of your time compiling it

we have SLOW p1s for my assembly class (simulating the motorola mc68000 processor) but it doesn't matter that much

In our case it takes forever because once we write it, and try to compile, if we get errors we're always waiting on a compile after the fix. It gets pretty annoying, but I have to live with it.

Oh fvck. I just realized that they're getting these replaced - that's why they're dicking around with them. And guess where they're going? To the A/V department - where they'll be MY problem instead of just my annoyance. Cripe. That's the last time I ever tell LJ it's okay to sign off on a transfer of computers from the CS department.

Are you kidding? Our engineering computers in my undergrad were new, and even then they were slow when you're doing certain things. If you had the rare older computer, it could literally take hours to get something to finish processing :( There are a lot of aspects of ECE where you need fast powerful computers.

If you're in one of the states that banned sodas (I think CA) in schools, sell soda for a hefty profit :)

Ouch.

I think I'm going to talk with my teacher and e-mail some companies about making getting some discounts...

Yeah, I know... I hate compiling stuff on slow machines :(

its not to bad for what were learning right now..... its an intro assembly class so..... for higher up stuff in ECE i think they use faster comps

then again CS at CU boulder is kinda low end of the budget for everything so eh..... i personally don't mind it for everything ive done so far....

I remember once doing some processing in MATLAB and having it run overnight in the computer lab because it would take hours...

I wouldn't mind our current systems as much if they didn't crash so much and were somewhat more flexible. It takes minutes to load the forum index... *sigh*

my linux box built on a POS mobo has never crashed.... but their unix boxes crash all the damn time.... makes compiling a bitch.

Soda here is has some restrictions but you can still get it. I think its time I took up something like this and tried to make a difference. I really hate sitting 4 inches away from a CRT...
