Computer Repair Gone Wrong

The worst part is probably when someone wants you to help them diagnose a computer over the phone. Some of them can be kind of obvious, but you get other ones that are the random blue screens that can be really hard to diagnose without having physical access to the machine.

Usually, I'll try and perform preventative maintenance with someone's PC if I'm around it and they've asked me for help before. When I go back up to NY, I usually ensure all updates have been done, there's virus protection, flash is up to date (both ActiveX and plug-in) and there's some good browser plug-ins. I'd like to install NoScript on their browser, but most people just allow everything anyway. :\

One problem I run into is a somewhat well-known issue with Windows Updates. I had to install probably 5+ sets of updates on the Vista machine, and when I told my sister/mother to keep the computer up to date, I was told, "it's set to automatically do it!" I looked up the time, and it was set to 3 AM. "Let me guess... the machine goes to sleep or gets turned off every night?" "Yeah." "Then it won't update... ever."

I wonder if Microsoft will finally fix that oversight in Windows 8.

Who in their right mind does Windows Updates?
It's not usually "Updating" anything, just checking your cookies to sell to advertisers mostly.

I had a classic the other day, I like playing golf, but the fees are usually too much and I dont really get time for 18 holes, so Sat & Sunday I play 9 holes with some friends at the public 9 hole of 1 of the big clubs here in Napier.
This 9 hole club started doing annual fee of $230, instead of $9 a round, so after my mates had joined up over several months, I decided on the Saturday to pay up, would save me heaps, however the big club who owns the little 9 hole said all annual were now finished period, no notice or anything....Well, my mates and I were calling this club this and that etc, and then come Monday, I had a job for a new client who was taking over a retail business, only to find, the client was also the President of the big golf club who stopped the Annual fees.....Had a good laugh with him when I told him my story, and after I had sorted everything out, he said, he will see what he can sort out.....
I dont mind helping people out, even just family of work colleagues. In a small city that I live, favours come round pretty fast!

Ah, small world!

I generally only do work on computers for my close family (uncles/aunts). If they ask me to do something for friends or whatever, they get a $30/hr, 2hr minimum rate. Either I get $60 to delete some adware, or I get left alone.
