I've taken this stance in the last few weeks.
"If your nephew was the CEO of Ford, would you ask him to help you change the oil on your focus? No, well my job is a lot like that. I can't do grunt work anymore.

The worst part is probably when someone wants you to help them diagnose a computer over the phone. Some of them can be kind of obvious, but you get other ones that are the random blue screens that can be really hard to diagnose without having physical access to the machine.
Usually, I'll try and perform preventative maintenance with someone's PC if I'm around it and they've asked me for help before. When I go back up to NY, I usually ensure all updates have been done, there's virus protection, flash is up to date (both ActiveX and plug-in) and there's some good browser plug-ins. I'd like to install NoScript on their browser, but most people just allow everything anyway. :\
One problem I run into is a somewhat well-known issue with Windows Updates. I had to install probably 5+ sets of updates on the Vista machine, and when I told my sister/mother to keep the computer up to date, I was told, "it's set to automatically do it!" I looked up the time, and it was set to 3 AM. "Let me guess... the machine goes to sleep or gets turned off every night?" "Yeah." "Then it won't update... ever."
I wonder if Microsoft will finally fix that oversight in Windows 8.
😵Who in their right mind does Windows Updates?
It's not usually "Updating" anything, just checking your cookies to sell to advertisers mostly.
