I got this thing to turn on....but the hard drive..floppy and cd rom doesnt turn on and i get nothing from the monitor...its like the computer isint on..but it is....all the fans are on....the cold catholde is on.... anyone got anyideas?

btw: when i try to press the on button (it works to turn the computer on) it wont turn the computer off. 😕😱

i had a similar problem. First people told me it was my power supply, which it could be for you since things aren't turning on. For me, it was actually my CPU. However everything for me was turning on except the monitor, so my case was slightly different, but that difference could be a whole different solution. Check ur power supply, check ur cpu, check your motherboard

how do you check your cpu? how do i know if its on or not? and same with the motherboard....how do i know if its "on" or not?

did you hook up power to the hard drive, floppy, and CD, or did you only hook up the data cable?

Also, hold the power button for 5 seconds and it'll shut off.

those little pins you have to stick the things that come in the case on...like " Reset Led" "Hdd Led" i think i got those in the right place...

Did you just build this comp? Did you have power unplugged while inside? My bet is mobo if thats the case. Obviously you are posting from a working computer so swap the power supplies first then see if the computer in question works properly or not. Rinse and repeat with other components.

yea i just built it....what do you mean about :

Did you have power unplugged while inside?

Explain..... 😕

Well one time I had spent a hour or so carefully assembleing my newegg.com purchase then tried to boot it and no video came up. So I knew it was probably the card wasnt seated all the way down. So carfully I opened the case pulled out the card and began to reseat it. But then I accidenty touched the motherboard with with card and a small spark flew up. Oh sh1t I forget to disconnect the power!!! Mobo fried.

Man that sucks....dont think that is it though. anyone else got surgestions?

is there a place online that helps tell you where each of those little pins go?

Start out with these things and see if it will post. cpu+heatsink and fan, memory and video card. If it doesn't post with these things then recheck your wiring.

Yup......

I think i have a bit of lead on this thing.... i was just playing with it, and i got the cdrom to turn on and of course as i mentioned before the fans all do...and still nothing from the video.... i think it has something to do with the motherboard. could my board be bad? I am gonna try the thing where i take everything out....and then go in piece by piece. But how do i know whether or not if the memory or cpu is on. 😕

btw: the 80 mm fan i have in the front of my case is connected to the mobo for power...it turns on....:frown:😕

Is your power supply set for the right voltage? There should be a little switch on the back with 2 settings. I think it should be set for 112v (?)

Do you have a "stock" HSF combo? I once bought an aftermarket heatsink with this burly fan for a rig I built a couple years back. The manufacturer had also included a copper shim that somehow got bent in transport. In my haste to power the damn thing on I didn't notice that the shim lifted the heatsink just enough to render it completely useless (i.e. no cooling since it wasn't flush). I had video for all of 3 seconds and half of a POST before my CPU fried. The symptoms on every successive attempt at booting thereafter were exactly what you describe now.

General rules of thumb, take out everything except one stick of memory, floppy, video, and proc (of course). Reseat everything. If you can't power on at all with that setup you need to start looking for a CPU to swap in. My money is on CPU.

Good luck.

edit: added "proc" above, definitely need that in order to get a rig to work. 🙂

My CPU doesnt even have a copper shim (is that bad?)

the voltage settings are 115 and 230 and i have it set at the 115v

since when have motherboards stopped doing the beeps?

my guess is the cpu or memory, the non-beepiness of the motherboard though still confuses me.

You don't need a copper shim, some people will try to tell you otherwise though. I wish I would have known that. 🙁

I've built a ton of machines for both personal use and for consulting, and the only time I've ever encountered non-motherbaord-beepiness during power-on is when the proc is dead. Sure there are other causes but that's just been my experience.

If you have any way of getting your hands on another proc to swap it in and test it, I definitely would asap. Make absolute sure that the heatsink is flush with the proc you have in currently though. 1 mistake was all it took for me to double check every time from now on.

Luckily I have a boatload of parts at my disposal to swap in when stuff like this arises. Does make it a little tricky when you don't have that luxury...
