Ok there are the parts. I made that list of parts....I'd say about 2-3 months ago. Seeing that prices change and better stuff come out, do you think I should still go with what I have listed?

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

My budget is 1300....... but I could...mabe go over a tad...<==The list that I have right now goes over 1300>_<

Wondering, how come when I look up that graphics card its gone up like almost 90 dollars in some stores and in one store its down like a couple of dollars!?

Do you suggest I get a different graphics card? As in a different 7800GT?
Also is toledo really even worth getting. Does it really even matter?

O😀 Ok

But my question is that since I don't plan on OCing until the CPU is off warranty should I really buy the opteron!? Because its not very fast unless you OC.......:\?

Opterons are the cores that past the most stringent of testing, because they are meant for servers/workstations and 24/7/365 use without failing. The ones that fail, but still past stringent testing become the X2 4800s and FXs. The rest become regulars A64s/X2s.

The only reason the Opteron 165 is cheaper than the X2 3800+ is because it's only clocked at 1.8Ghz while the X2 3800+ is clocked at 2.0Ghz. The Opteron 170 which is clocked at 2.0GHz costs $80 more than the X2 3800+. And the Opteron 165 will reach 2.0GHz without even breaking a sweat. The X2 4400+ is the cheapest X2 with 1MB L2 cache per core, clocked at 2.2GHz and costs $200 more than the Opteron 165. Comparing the Opteron 175 to the X2 4400+ you can see that server-class quality does cost extra. A 400Mhz stable overclock should easily be obtainable on most if not all Opteron 165s. So there you go. $525 CPUs performance for $300

Dual-core Opteron 165 ($299)
1.8GHz / 1MB L2 per core

Dual-core Opteron 170 ($399)
2.0GHz / 1MB L2 per core

Althon 64 X2 3800+ ($322)
2.0GHz / 512k L2 per core

Athlon 64 X2 4400+ ($499)
2.2GHz / 1MB L2 per core

Dual-core Opteron 175 ($525)
2.2GHz / 1MB L2 per core

First off thanks alot ribbon13 and thekillerjks for replying😀

The main reason I'm not totally for the opteron is because I havn't really done much research on the CPU.

I don't plan to OC for quite a while...:\ so seeing that its1.8 and not 2 made me kinda iffy.... since it was more than the 3800 X2.

Secondly I don't really know what mobo it work with and if I need special ram, etc.<--If ya could fill me in on some of these things that would be great😀

So basicly I'm just wondering if my parts that I've picked out already would work with the opteron. Since I'm not OCing very soon I'm not sure what mobo I should really get any more.

You might want to hold off on buying an opteron from Monarch. I just got this msg today:
Thank you for your recent order with Monarch Computer! You placed an order for an Opteron 165 processor. We received an overwhelming response to the processor, which quickly depleted our existing inventory. Unfortunately, we have just been informed by AMD directly that there was a manufacturing issue that occurred on this particular processor. AMD does not expect to have stock on this processor until the end of this month, and that may change depending on the manufacturing process. We do apologize immensely for this, and would like to offer you an AMD gift bag of items to go along with your processor once they are available for shipping again. If you have any questions, please do no hesitate to reply back to this email. Be sure to include your order number in any correspondence back. Please check our website for the most up to date ETA on the processor, and if there are any developments that will cause any more delays we will update you.

Thank you,

Monarch Computer Systems, Inc.

O...:\ new egg wants like 475 for theirs lol!

....
I'm not sure what u mean on this part: A 400Mhz stable overclock should easily be obtainable on most if not all Opteron 165s

what do u mean?

bump+ does anyone else have a suggestion for the PSU? or Monitor?

Not that that psu isn't good or anything I'm just not impressed with the reviews off newegg<==though I know U CAN"T decide things upon them

Get an Opteron 165. You can overclock the ****** out of it. Stop worrying so much. Get it retail and if by miracle, something goes wrong while overclocking , use the 3-year warranty to get it replaced. What else do you want? A blowjob?
Anyways, lose the grossly overpriced OCZ ram and get the G.SKILL 1GB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 500 (PC 4000). Get 2 if you MUST have 2Gb of ram. I'd get one and buy the second later when it goes down in price but that's just me.

Do *NOT* buy a goddamn floppy drive. Let the damn things die! You can get a usb flashdrive for like 50 cents nowadays or use an ipod, a toaster or whatever. Seriously! Enough with the floppy crap. Every single mobo biod supports usb boot
now.

The rest of your components are fine.

The Opteron 170 looks like a smart choice. Other than that his list looks pretty good except I think he chose DDR400 when Toledo supports DDR500.

Windows XP does not support USB Flahsfor loading drivers during installation. Long Live the Floppy!

thnx for replying to all who did😀 and I hope I get lots more😀

Gozulin.. The reason for the floppy is because my sister and I need them for school. The computers at our schools suck and most of the time they want you to put your assignment on a floppy.

As far as the ram is conserned, could ya please put a link or somthing or compare the price of the part I picked to the part you are telling me to get?
-----------
To repeat myself: Isn't the warranty VOID if you OC the opteron or the 3800 X2?

Seasonic S12 600<--- Is this kinda extreme since I don't even have two HDDs and at max i'd have 2...?
^ is there a cheaper PSU thats just as good but isn't 600W..?

I'm looking into the Opteron CPUs now but I'm still wondering about that warranty thingy.....

So the 1.8 Opteron will run like the 3800 X2? and its cheaper?

ram=I donno anymore

monitor=not even to that yet

graphics card=7800GT of some sort hopefully😀

case=sticking with the same case😀

Any help is greatly appreciated! 😀 Hope to hear from ya all🙂

Yes the warrenty is void if you overclock the CPU, so don't do it untill the warrenty is over and your about 10 minutes from buying a new one when this PC is on it's last leg.

As for memory, Dual Core is one of the few AMD CPU's that Support DDR500. Also Look at Plextor optical drives, the differance is immeidatly noticeable. They are fast, smooth, quiet, feature packed, and produce very low errors. Also Plextor alows you to burn 1GB on a standard CD-R (verbatim works best).

My memory recomendation

Well, since you still need to shave off some $$

This ram looks hawt  $108 DDR433 CAS2.5 1024MB. You only want a modest overclock anyway, that is perfect and has a near the floor price too boot. You could get 1 of them at first, since you budget issues, and get another one when you can afford it.

It's nice but his CPU supports DDR500 why do you choose DDR433?

I think if he wants to save some money he could start by choosing a less expensive motherboard. Or then again he could shop around and get the same parts for less. Contrary to what many of you egg-heads might be suckerd in to believeing, newegg.com is not always the cheapest place to shop; it's just one of the most convienent.

I suggest these two fine motherboards for less than $100. The only differance is, the more expensive one does not have nVIDIA RAID and in it's place they put a 1394b Controller with 3 ports. Based on his earlier posts, I think he does not plan on overclocking so DFI is just expensive waste and overkill for his needs..

Because DDR433 will be useful for 1:1 minor overclock on the Opteron, and it's more performance for the dollar. With a minor overclock at 213, there would be absolutely no risk, it would only be running at about 2.0GHz, matching X2 3800+ speeds.

And technically, it's new divider support
