Computer/Mobo Problem

I recently purchased an Athlon XP 1700 from another member on anandtech for $42.00 and I wanted to upgrade my existing 1.4 T-bird processor to that. I did everything textbook as far as the installation. I used Article Silver thermal paste and I have a volcano CPU fan. Here are my specs:

Mobo: Soyo SY-K7V Dragon Plus!
AMD Socket-A Based VIA KT266A ATX Motherboard

I was under the impression that it did support the Athlon XP Processor.

Here is what the problem is:

Upon bootup with the new processor we got one long beep code then that was continuous. That told me that the motherboard might not support the XP processor unlike the motherboard boxes' advertisement. So, then we went back to the other 1.4 T-Bird processor. Everything was done textbook style with seating it etc. Now, we get nothing. No post, no video, no beeps. NO NOTHING! What could this be? Did the newer processor fry the motherboard? What is the deal with this crap? I don't understand. All fans power up, we reseated everything that was inside a slot including AGP. We moved the memory to slot number two. The CMOS was cleared via the jumper to no avail. Any suggestions? Thanks fellas.

I'll look up the CPU compatibility in a minute here. In the meantime, do you have an RPM-signalling fan plugged into the CPUFAN header? SOYOs want to see an RPM signal on there by default, and won't POST without it, although you can override by holding the Insert key while powering up, then go into the BIOS and disable "Fan-Off Control."

Back in a few with the CPU info...

True, but still his old 1.4 Ghz processor should work fine in the computer since it has been for a long time. There is no reason that shouldn't work correctly. Everything is back at his original configuration.

The one thing that comes to mind is that you cleared the CMOS, which switches on the Fan-Off Control (since its default setting is Enabled). So try to override the FOC by holding down the Insert key while powering up, for starters.

Also, could the heatsink be installed backwards now? Reversing the heatsink on an older board that doesn't have emergency shutdown circuitry can be Bad News and could certainly fry the CPU in seconds. :Q

I am uncertain on the whole reversing the heatsink portion. You mean how the clips hook up to the slots on the base of the socket? That should go one certain way? I thought it was universal sort of speak. Just line up the heat sink with the processor, press it down and clip the two side clips and away you go. Am I wrong on this?

If it's a KT266A there is a good chance it won't work. the CPU is probably a TBred B CPU and may not work, if it was a Palomino XP it would work just fine. I have a KT266A board and the TBred CPU's definitely do not work.

Well how come his old 1.4 Tbird Palamino does not work now? An update on what is going on. He used my 800 Mhz T-bird in his machine and now it is working. However this 1.4 Palamino doesn't. Could he have fried his 1.4 processor? This baffles me.

I suppose that is possible.. just working with the logical answer that alot of the KT266A boards (first ones around) won't work with a TBred CPU.. I went through the same thing, I even contacted the manufacturer and told me I wasn't able to use a TBred. I am stuck with my XP1700+ Pally forever unless I upgrade the mobo.

Can you test the 1.4 in a friend's system or something? You could have fried it......
