Another CompUSA employee refugee here (only a few months). They do hire some very stupid people, and the dumbest of the bunch become managers. Some of the tech guys (the ones who troubleshoot/install) did actually know a good bit, but the others were equally as stupid (I was in customer service and knew more about computers than them). The sales people were the dumbest of the lot and routinely lied to their customers, which I would then have to admit when they complained. I didn't really care, I just told them, "Oh, I'm sorry -- he lied to you". The honesty usually shocked them enough that they wouldn't complain too much.

I only buy from there in a true emergency or when there's a really good rebate.

You are right u get what u pay for. I am a current CompUSA employee, just your typical floor grunt. I know alot about computers, which makes me a liability to the sales manager. As a compusa employee u are judged solely by your ability to sell replacement plans and warranties. My manager has re-supplied his hardware sales floor with former shoe salesman and pays them more than i make. Makes it sting just a bit more when the morons come and ask me wether this keyboard on the shelf will work on one of the new systems they are looking at buying. After explaining the wonderful world of PS/2 connections to him, i looked at my manager who was near and shook my head. It's all about money, and they want TAP (warranties). There are few of me left there and soon there won't be any. It's not entirely CompUSA's fault tho, i worked there in 96-97 and at the time we had a sales floor of people who knew alot, everyone knew the basics and some were getting close to getting their A+ or MCSE. We could tell them all about products but the fact is, the customers would go where it was cheaper. There are very few loyal customers anymore. Would any of you pay $10 more for something if it was from a store u trusted? Would a normal consumer realize when they were being lied to? Well i'll end my rant now but don't expect compusa's situation to change. They are going to be Best Buy without toasters in a couple of months.

You can usually tell the difference between a knowledgeable salesperson when you ask them to compare 2 similar products. Thats how I pick which one to talk to.

The only time I talk to the morons there (No offense to you Pulp, you're a special case) are when I need a price check because the price isnt listed on the shelf, or when I'm returning something. Other than that, I like listening to the morons try to help customers...I've gotten the urge to say to the customer "excuse me, but this guy is wrong, here's what you need", but I'm not rude enough.

Just came back from Best Buy where I was told that there is no such thing as a SODIMM.

Then I got the price break refund on the SODIMM I bought there 2 weeks ago. Now get this, I paid 89.95, the paper said on sale for 59.95 but the girl at the register gave me back 39.95. Being the nice, honest person I am, I pointed it out to her and she said that the "Register is never wrong" so I said thank you and goodbye, taking my refund in cash, of course. I guess if the register is broken they are out of business.

Your just too nice. one of my favorite pastimes is going to CompUSA, hanging around, and interrupting when I hear a nice string of bs. The most recent, was when a salesman was trying to tell a guy that if he wanted to record music on his CDR, he had to buy music cdrs, and then, that he had to get a music cdrecorder to use them. I stepped in, and the salesman just glared at me, at which point, I found it hard to keep in the laughter, but I did. Im not THAT rude. :D
