At the Emeryville, CA store you can pick up the memory for $0.01 instantly. When I left an hour ago there were still about 50 of them left. The PC100 notebook RAM, however, is free after MIR. The manager said there WILL be more available tomorrow but I really doubt it.

I was there too. They don't have anymore and they stopped selling it for a penny at around 11 am. Sold out at 11:30. I think it was just a mistake cause I tried getting a second DIMM but he said that they were no longer selling them for a penny. Had them pricematch the ones I purchased yesterday for a penny each. This was a great deal. I also doubt it they will have more tomorrow amd don't expect them at this great deal price. They weren't going to take prepaids too. It pays to show up early

Konichiwa- I was ready to pay by credit card and the sales rep. said it was only $0.01 so I gave him a penny. That was easy :)

If you only pay a penny...Then they wont have any of your rebate money to day trade with!!! Play fair now!!!

I often wonder how much these companys can make off your rebate $$$ in 3 months

Rebates aren't about the 3 months... they are about the percentage of people who never turn them in. Kind of like the movie rental income, most of which comes from late fees :)

I suspect that close to 40% of rebates (or even higher) are never turned in.

The REAL way that rebates "work" is that many of the management companies who process the rebate forms, UPC codes, etc., make it as difficult as possible for the consumer to actually receive the rebate. The 40% figure may be correct, but it certainly involves the percentage of legitimate claims that these crooks seek to limit their payments to.

Of course, we ALWAYS receive our rebates without any problem, and ALWAYS on time, right?

Actually I read an article in the Wall Street Journal that the processing rate on rebates is about 50%. That is why cyberrebate is so successfull.

I would think the rebate submission on Cyberrebate is higher than 50%. Unlike a retail store where the sale may be an impulse sale, many of the folks who go through the trouble of ordering from CR will probably go through the trouble to follow through with the rebate also.

Also with the prices at CR being so hight it's not as easy to just dismiss the rebate and forget about it.

But I'm sure that plenty of people still don't follow through.

About that "40% of rebates are never turned in" estimate. I suspect that figure is a little high. BUT, based on experience, if you don't save photocopies of all your stuff and call or email them when the rebate is two or three months late and ask them where it is, and then they "discover that your rebate was mailed... yesterday, yes, it was mailed yesterday" then I expect that at least half of all rebates aren't called on are never mailed. Belkin has done this repeately. Hi-val played the waiting game till they went bankrupt and I can guess when I'm going to get my share out of that ;) Microsoft has NEVER done this, Symantec has never done this, Intuit Quicken/Tax rebate came in a WEEK! I almost fainted when it showed up.

Rebate, marketing strategy.
They score when people who aren't familiar to rebate or didn't follow the tiny prints correctly.
I always take care of mir stuffs right away so I don't forget.

VorBota,

Bag the Industry store - those guys suck! Make the drive to the Montclair store whicha ALWAYS has much more stuff and has a much friendlier staff. Went to the Montclair store today and, after a long wait, picked up two PC133. I wouldn't be completely surprized if they had a few more left.

I run my rebates like a bank account. Follow all the rules and follow through. Expert was the only rebate I had trouble with and it was because it was bought out by another company. I went to the new company and they gave me a email address to check on the rebate and when I informed them that a friend and I had not received the checks. They sent them out immediately. Received in about three days. In the past two years and 6 months I have sent off $1750.00 and collected all but three. Two are at staples and the rebate center says the checks will be printed on the 21st of Feb. One rebate slip had the wrong amount $20.00 and the rebate was for $30.00. The check is being written for $20.00 and I have sent them a email for the correction asking for an explanation with the documentation from their web site showing the $20.00 will be raised to $30.00. The only other rebate is one I sent to HP for the HP9350I for $50.00 two days ago. I keep very strict records and the 800 phone numbers. If I have a question prior to submitting the rebate I don't hesitate to call and ask the proper procedure. The companies offering the rebates do not want bad PR and if the rebate company does a poor job resulting in complaints, they change rebate centers. Future Shop in Canada had such a problem and they took over the rebates until they found another company to service them.

Chuck2, do you remember which companies handled the 3 rebates that you didn't get? Because I'd like to avoid the worst rebate processors.

For example, I've had problems with every rebate I've sent to (TCA Fulfillment, in New Rochelle, NY. This company brags of reducing payouts by 10-20%, and they must work hard at this because in each of the 3 times I dealt with them, they said that my submission never arrived, and the last 2 times they said that even my resubmissions didn't make it. I finally contacted the BBB, and TCA told them that I'd receive my check by mid-Jan (6-month wait). That passed without a check in the mailbox, and when I phoned them a week later they said my check would be "mailed today." Two weeks later, they again said it would be "mailed today." So when they told me the same thing last week, I was shocked when I actually received a check a few days later.

I have a simple rebate method. I get 2 copies of the rebate form send one off and throw the other in an envelope when 8-10 weeks go by I call. Seems like I always have to call.:| Once I got paid twice on the same rebate!!! And another was CD Stomper where I called and they sent me a bunch of blank cd labels for the inconvienience. They are late on another rebate right now.

i've found microsoft to be excellent too, rebates in a few weeks.
i got my maxtor rebate, and i think i've always gotten my staples rebates.
compusa was problematic a few years back, but for the ones i've called on (i've probably missed some small ones), they then sent them.
one thing is that you dont know which $10 rebate you received and which to complain that you didnt receive.
i've only recently tried circuit city rebates so i'll find out soon.

hi val was terrible, tried to screw me out of two rebates and only sent them when i threatened to call the attorney general of california and better business bureau. on both of them they gave me some lame excuse, like the upc didnt match - which was a lie and i had a copy.
meanwhile, they are out of business, and compusa has a hi val rebate advertised this week. no one will ever get that rebate.

another company that gave me an incredibly hard time was smith micro.
i had to call them tons of times, and was told many times that it would be sent immediately and then had to call two weeks later.
they were pretty sleazy.

i also ordered one of those sams 24 hour books and they told me some crap that the rebate was sent in too late.
