I just got hired on as a "hardware guy" at a local CompUSA, and I was turned down from the PC floor sales. A few of my classmates are frowning on the job choice as "...compusa has a reputation of hiring (idiots)." I find this somewhat true, as the "pretty girl" who got the floor sales job doesn't know why Complaq's suck, who wonders why I call it complaq, and has an HP at home.. she doesn't know a good buy from a bad one, but since she is pretty and can be trained to "push" a product, she gets the job, more pay and commission... MEANWHILES, I get a much lesser pay for knowing more, having more experience, but not as pretty, and they expect me (I asked a few ?s and found it to be true)... they expect me to train everyone else, and/or answer any ?s the floor ppl might have. WHAT CR@P! Shouldn't I, then, be paid more than them?!?!?! :|:disgust:

just venting....

Sounds a lot like my situation. I'm not officially in the MIS department, but I am constantly answering questions and fixing problems for the Systems guys, as well as doing my own work (I was promised a year ago that I'd be transferred to Systems) even though they get paid quite a bit more than I do.. :(:|

<< doesn't know why Complaq's suck >>

tsk...tsk...

I do however know why I work for Compaq, and you work for CompUsa... :Q
don't get all bent out of shape.

Compaq is fine gear, never - ever a problem... and I have 4 desktops, 1 laptop, and 2 servers.

CompUSA never even looked at my application I think since they never called, didn't know a thing when I called them, etc. I'm only 16, but I knew alot more than most of their sales peoples. Kinda pisses me off. Also applied at Best Buy and The Good Guys and they were nice enough to call and tell me I wouldn't be hired.

I got my Tech start at CompUSA.

Do what I did...Read/take every/any book that can help you. Use you Reseller Employee status to get high end software for CHEAP.

Something to keep in mind...CompUSA doesn't make money from answering questions, they make money from PUSHING PRODUCT. So they need a good salesman more than a good tech.

Use it for what it's good for, then get out.

My wife worked for CompUSA for five years. She was one of their top sellers of training classes in the USA.

When they downsized two years ago, she was hardly offered anything to stay. Would have taken a dramatic pay cut. It was more like she was forced to leave.

As Namuna says, use the position for bigger and better things.

If you feel like you were better qualified to sell products as opposed to working on them, you could always file a reverse discrimination suit against them.

If it was me, I would rather be in back working on them, you ever dealt with the general public on a daily basis? If you had I bet you would be itching to get in the back of the store.

working at compusa has some nice benefits, but is mostly suck. lest everyone forgot , compusa is suck.

i worked there for about a year while i was in college. started off as the upgrade/repair center guy. manned the upgrades counter where people buy memory, hard drives, digital cameras, etc. then went to hardware sales after about 3 months to make a bit more money. you get spiffs (commission) on the warranties you sell. and man, if you knew how to talk the talk, you can get a very nice bonus check.

incidentally, what are your duties and responsibilities as a "hardware guy"?

here's my take on the compusa i experienced. LONG RANT :)

- great benefits, you get everything at cost! e.g. oh boy, too many to list on here, but my favorites are the ide cables and power splitters they sell for about 9.99 ea. cost is like $0.40 ea.!!
- you know what sort of great sales and deals will happen usually a week to two weeks before the public will know and therefore you can inform your friends ahead of time.
- if there is a super great deal, you can save the item and keep it for yourself. employees at other stores do this too, so no need to stereotype this as a compusa only thing. e.g. - i purchased 100pks of TDK cdrs for 29.99 back when 50pk spindles cost $50! i made a killing on these selling them to warez friends at school :)
- vendors from different companies, like Norton, Toshiba, HP, IBM, and Microsoft especially, would give all sorts of free goodies like tshirts, free full version software, etc, to try and sway you to push their products.

- the bad , if you know your computer sh*t, which it seems like you do, you WILL become the point of reference for everyone out on the floor.
- also, you dont get paid as much as you should if you are know your computer stuff. which is why there's never anyone knowledgeabl in compusa very long.
- no consistent scheduling. it changes every week due to the operations budget. your amount of hours fluctuate weekly. but then again, most retail establishments are like this.
- all the managers are idiots. i really think this is why most crews at compusa are so lame. it starts from the top down.
- you get alot of pc-ignorant folks asking alot of the same newbie questions. whats the megahertz mean? whats ram? whats hard drive?
- you dont get any sort of appreciation for all the hardwork you put in.
- you get slaved to the bone every day, 15 min breaks is a luxury which they do not always let you take.
- you are on your feet 8 hrs the entire day
- you have to deal with the public every day. it WILL grind you down eventually, no matter how customer service oriented you are.

you do however, get ALOT of connections while working there. i got a much better job from this hot blonde whom i sold a sony laptop to. too bad she was married tho, but we did have some fun flirting!;) never hurts to flirt i say! it got me a new job!

at any rate, on a final note, i just wanted to touch up on the hardware sales spiff i talked about earlier. not to brag or seem conceited by any means, but just to give a rough idea of how much the nice bonus check is, i averaged about twice as much as my normal salary on my bonus checks alone. on bad months, i'd usually get at least the same amount as my normal salary, if not, then just a bit under it.
(keep in mind we get paid minimally tho :frown: it was just enough to get by)

the reason why i bring this up kitros, is that i sense this is a real hotspot for you as you mentioned in your post about the pretty, but dumb girl who was in hardware sales. compusa does not pay anyone jack sh*t, so if you want to maximize your earning potential there, you want to be in hardware sales, bud. ask your manager to give you a 1 month or a 2wk trial period and if you dont perform up to standard, then tell him you'll go back to your old position.

let me know how your stay at compusa goes, kitros. feel free to PM or email me if you have any questions!

namuna and sluggo is absolutely correct. use it as a stepping stone to something better. i did :)

sometimes i think it might actually be worth it to stay on part time 5-10 hrs a week, just for the benefits tho. getting hardware gear at cost!! naaaah... compusa is still suck. lol

Thanks guys... full understanding on this end. It truly is a "get me through college" job. While going to school for networking, I get the cool stuff @ cost for alll my fellow classmates to buy @ a cheaper (but beneficial to me) price. It is a stepping stone for me, and sure beats the hell out of the HOTEL INDUSTRY!!! Yes, that's right, the job I am quitting is that of a Front Desk Clerk... and for all of you who said something along the lines of CSRep'ing, well, anything can be better than that. If anyone here needs cables and stuff, LMK! I'll hook you guys up.

Thanks for all your help!

CompUSA does not pay by experience, niether does any other retail chain store. You JUST got hired by them...so do not expect to get $13 an hr from the gate. If you want to get paid for experience, you DO NOT work at a computer store.

Hmmm, you know, after reading this over several times, I am pretty much split on the type of "job" you're referring to. Hehehe....

No - you will never be paid on the same level as Sales

Understand this law of the tech world - TECH SUPPORT IS THE ARSE END OF THE BUSINESS. Same level tech and sales will never be paid the same because Sales brings in the dough. They get more benefits from manuf. to push their items, they are the last to be laid off. Sales is sales and tech is tech. Sell your soul and you too can become sales.... but better break all the mirrors in the house. After saying things like "that'll be as easy as putting bread in a toaster" to customers to get them to buy a scanner / SCSI something or other, you may not be able to look yourself.

This is just the way things are, no matter where you go. Techs are a cost center, and sales are profit centers and this effects EVERY decision management makes. Period.

I applied at 2 different CompUSA's last summer - not even a call back. Their loss :p

And today at OMX some guy asks me for a replacement printer cartridge (a C1823A, the starter cartridge) - I gave him the C1823D and explained that the A meant starter, D was the full blown version. The guy told me he was just at CompUSA, picked up the C1823D, then asked their "knowledgeable" sales person - the sales person said they don't carry the C1823A, and that the C1823D was not to be used in place of the C1823A.

One of these days I should act like a clueless customer and ask them about something - then blow them away :D

I applied at CompUSA at the beginning of June, so I could work over the summer. I would be 17 two weeks from the time I applied.

Well, they call me for an interview like the last week of August and then have the stupidity to ask if I can work full-time. I said, uhhh no. So I did like THREE interviews. The last one was TWO hours as the manager asked me all kinds of computer questions. He said he'd call me to begin training. Never called, so I have a different job now.
