Compression gear?

Whats everyone's opinion on it? Seems like the 'quality' brands, CW-X, 2XU, etc, are expensive. Zensah seems to be getting decent reviews and costs less, though still pricey. Worth the expense or gimmick?

Hard to say...the people that I talk to that have compression suits or top/bottoms/sleeves love them. This is in the Crossfit world. They say that it helps their recovery immensely.

But I haven't tried it myself, personally. Closest thing I have are Nike Pro Combat compression shorts and pants...nothing like the Skins/CW-X/2XU products.

Wow, I thought UA was expensive... Uh I like wearing UA/Nike compression gear but paying 60-100 per piece of clothing that I'll only wear for exercise? I guess if I had money to blow.

I wear compression shorts or compression pants when I play rugby, but mostly for the purpose of keeping my sensitive bits tucked out of the way, and in the case of the pants, the added benefit of thermal insulation. I have several pieces and they're either UA or Nike.

Compression sleeves are meh. They improve proprioceptions potentially due to the stretch and maintain temperature of the wrapped area. In addition, if there's enough compression, it can aid with returning blood toward the heart. Overall, I wouldn't say they make a huge difference for performance, unless you play in cold weather or have some chronic injuries (that are less treatable than some, like osteoarthritis).

I have two pairs of compression calf sleeves; one Zoot, one Zensah. The Zoots are much much tighter, and because of that, much harder to get on and off. The Zensahs aren't nearly as tight, and slip on and off easily. And surprisingly, I do notice a difference when I wear them, and both seem to have an equal effect. I don't wear them while I am working out, unless I am doing a track workout in spikes, because my calves tend to tighten up then, but wearing them after a workout or race and going to bed in them does make my legs feel a lot better. Maybe it's psychosomatic; I don't know. I don't think they improve performance any, but they sure help my legs recover faster.

I'm more interested in the tights/shorts/shirts rather than the sleeves. I find for leg/arm warmers, cotton socks with the toe end cut open is more agreeable. And much more easily discarded on a race than an expensive brand name sleeve.

I can't afford this stuff, not until my kids leave the house for good. 2 out of 3 leave in 2012, maybe my wife can buy me some for christmas. 🙂

My experience the UA products last quite a bit longer. I've gone through 2 or 3 pairs of other brands and my UA shorts are still going strong.

qtf, you get what you pay for, I bought some C9 (Champion) stuff at Target 2 years ago. It wasn't expensive, but it didn't last anywhere close to as long as my UA or Nike Combat Pro. The c9 I had wasn't the same as darkxshade linked to though, but for $25 you can get Nike Combat Pro.

There's less physiologic reasoning behind compression garments that are closer to the torso. The sleeves have good logic because plasma can be lost into the interstitium and the sleeves help promote returning fluid back to the heart. Closer to the torso, you have a lot more lymph vessels to return that fluid back toward the heart inherently. Things like compression shorts are more built for male comfort (like the new-age jock strap) or general smoothness of movement (due to reduced friction between thighs).
