If you are going to buy, go ebay for some Acoustic research component cables.
I bought a set used for $13 shipped.
Right now I split them up and using one to hook my subwoofer and two for my TV audio out to my receiver.

I recently got a big screen tv that can use component cables. Right now I am using S-Video. My non-progressive scan DVD player also has component outputs. Would there be a noticeable difference in quality from S-Video to Monster Component Cable?

Don't get Monster. It's a complete waste of money. If you knew how they built them and what materials they used, you'd be surprisingly angry.
For a MUCH better value and much more extreme performance, get a cable that uses Canare RCAP connectors and either Belden 1695 (best) or Belden 1694a.
I use these guys:
BLUE JEANS CABLES
Other places sell this same exact cable in the $150+ category.

Don't take this the wrong way, but regarding your last college comment:
You can buy a 51" Widescreen TV but can't afford a $40-$50 compnent cable?......
