Paying out the ass is subjective...there's links in my posts above to put together a rifle for ~$600, which is pretty damn reasonable, it would be about another $80 or so to get a decent red dot sight on top of that from primary arms which is the only thing I didn't link above but I can if you want

This is one of three countries in the world where citizens actually have a right to bear arms, so why wouldn't you?

In the review for the upper that corwin recommended the guy says
Upon arrival of the upper I took the BCG and charging handle out of it and took the handguards off and cleaned it up really well and lubed it appropriately and also put a coat of oil on the outside of the barrel and reciever. Broke down the BCG and cleaned and lubed all parts then re-assembled the upper
which got me thinking about maintenance. Is there a guide someone can link to with supplies and instructions for taking care of these?

Best place to find maintenance instructions, or pretty much anything else you want to know about an AR, is at ar15.com, here's a link to the cleaning/maintenance sub-forum with threads on how-to as well as cleaning kits and suppliers

Just went and picked mine up, on a sad note my dealer upped their xfer fee to $40:eek: Still a nice deal and after seeing it he's ordering one for himself as well;) First impression it seems pretty solid, trigger is decent enough and is supposed to smooth out even more once it's broken in...wish they had spent a little more time smoothing down the front of the mag well from the mold seam but I can file that myself with ease. The stock is only a 3 position on a commercial sized buffer tube, which only means if you want to replace it with a mil-spec sized stock you'll have to replace the buffer tube assembly as well...not really an issue for most people. Overall I'm impressed so far, can't wait for my upper to come in and for my Wife's B-day to roll around so I can give it to her and hit the range:D

Yeah it used to be $30 but he's been losing a lot of sales of his stock to internet purchases, so he's making it up in transfer fees...guess I'm going to have to look up the guy in my gun club with the FFL since he'll only charge $20, just a pain to have to catch someone at home but for half the price it's worth it now...
all right, thinking about snagging this psa upper:
http://palmettostatearmory.com/index...-m4-upper.html

is the optional BCG a decent one, or should i pick that up seperate elsewhere? how about the charging handle? thinking of getting the MOE handgaurds, seems pretty decent for 20 bucks.
That is the exact one that I ordered last week, just waiting for it to ship out...The BCG is a nice one, the charging handle isn't anything special but it does the job, I don't think I'd spend extra on one with an oversized latch or anything like that, but I prefer a more streamlined look. I do like the MOE handguards, I have the full MOE furniture set on mine and there's even a forward vertical grip that is made to attach to it even though it doesn't have a rail, but for it I would look elsewhere, I got one on Fleabay for $20 brand new. Make sure you pick out some sights, either an MBUS or red dot from somewhere and some mags then you'll be ready to rock and roll.

Jeez, he wouldn't even cut you a break on the transfer fee for hooking him up with the deal?

BTW, try calling pawn shops - I've found a few out here that do FFL transfers for $15-20. Dealers are $35-40.

Could this be used with a cheap .22lr upper? Seems like you'd be able to save a bit over the $400 or $500 Colt/S&W models.

Sorry if it's been discussed in the 3 previous pages of the thread

Not in depth but yes it accepts any standard AR15 upper regardless of caliber, and it would make a great intro gun for a kid since it would be lighter:)

Been thinking of getting one myself but haven't decided on one in particular, you have one in mind already?

I highly doubt it. If it's a 5.56 lower, then you could do:
(*I've never even heard of a lot of these calibers before)

223/5.56 and based upon that case
6 x 45 *
7 x 40 *
357 Mag Rimless
300 Whisper / .300Fireball / 300-.221
6.5 x 40 *
.30 Coyote (30 x 45) *
.17 Remington
.17 Mach IV
.20 Tactical *
.19 Calhoun *

5.7 FN

.204 Ruger

6.8 SPC
30 HRT
338 Spectre *
10 mm Mag
35/40 *
219 WASP-C *
7.62 x 40 *

5.45x39
7.62 x 39
.338 x 39
6 PPC *
6.5 Grendel / 6.5 AR / 6.5 PPC Improved
22 PPC *
7 sCAR .... *

30 Carbine
5.45x39 / .21 Ghengis *

7 BR *
6.5 BR *
300 Sabre

8mm (belt fed upper)
.308 (again a belt fed upper - no longer available)

458 SOCOM
44 Mag
440 CorBon *
44 AMP *
.475 Tremor *
50AE
499LW *
50 Beowulf

.50 BMG (single shot)
.50 Blackpowder (1 made)

9mm
45ACP
32ACP
22 LR
17 HV
10mm
7.62x25
224 BoZ *
7.62x24 *
9x23
.357 Sig
.357 Auto
40S&W

223 WSSM
243 WSSM

You would need to do a AR-10 style lower for stuff like .308 because the rounds are too long to fit into the magwell.

He specifically said "yes it accepts any standard AR15 upper". If it's an AR15 upper it'll work... REGARDLESS OF CALIBER. Like you said though, not every caliber known to man fits in an AR15 but that's why he said AR15. He didn't say any caliber at all, he said any AR15 caliber.

well, as you can see by comments in this thread, there are a lot of newbies asking about this deal. I thought clarification was in order.

That is why I said standard but you did well to clarify since some may not have known the difference...

Your list was pretty comprehensive but it did miss one "caliber" of upper, the crossbow;)

I've had an upper picked out for months but it's been oos. The guys tell me it might be in by the end of this month.

Why not just go with Palmetto Arms?

Hard to beat their prices and they have a great reputation.

Got the list from ar15.com

I forgot about the crossbow upper. those things are ridiculously expensive. you can get a nice dedicated crossbow for like 1/3 the price.

Do you mean Palmetta Arms... as in this? http://www.palmettoarmsllc.com/forsale.html

Because I don't trust that website really, and it sounds like a custom shop more than a reseller. If you mean Palmetto State Armory, then that IS the place I was looking at that is OOS on everything I wanted. It's been that way for months and now they're started to remove the bookmarked product pages I had, which says to me I won't be seeing them anytime soon. I can just go with pkfirearms as they have stuff I want in stock.

Yeah I recognized the list, visit there now and then when I need some info...and the crossbow upper is outrageously expensive, the brother of one of our maintenance guys has one and he says it's insanely powerful and accurate though, still since you can't even use them to hunt in most states I don't much see the use in it

Sadly they are running way behind since their popularity exploded...but you're bookmarks may be broken because they recently changed their site, I had several that don't work anymore for that exact reason, or maybe they are just having that many supply problems right now...I know I'm still waiting for my standard upper to ship that I ordered on the 13th but of course they say it takes 10 days to assemble and test...I'm just impatient:p

I checked the main page listing to try and find the upper I've wanted for a while, but it's gone from the page completely now... not just marked OOS. I think they removed all of their stainless stuff.
