4850 trades blows with the 9800GTX+/GTS250. The 4870 is about on a par with the GTX260, again one does better on some games, the other on others.
a 4890 isn't enough of an increase over 4850 to justify the upgrade imo.
If any i'd be looking at the new 5800 series.
50-70% isn't enough for you? and the 58xx is A) unattainable and B) way outta the price range
for me personally it has to be at least twice as fast, but that's just my opinion.
I currently have a HD4850.
What's the comparable nVidia card to it as well as a comparable card to a 4870?
Thanks.
Depends on the game, and how well each card OCs.but if you're going to spend the money on a GTX260, there is no reason not to buy a 4890, which again thrashes it.
The reason i'm asking about comparable cards is that I presently have a 4850, but am getting ready to build a "Hackintosh" & from what i've read, the nVidia-based cards play nicer.
I'm not trying to start any "wars" about what next AMD card I should get, but a comparable nVidia to my 4850 (unless a better nVidia can be had that wouldn't be much more).
Thanks.

okie dokie. find me a game that the 260 is even in OC distance from and i'll gladly yield. Stock performance isn't even worth comparing...
*and i don't own either card, i have no reason to defend either one either way, i'm just lookin at the numbers.
The 4890 is cheaper than that card and if you OC both of them, there's no question what card will be faster.http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3656&p=10
You are right about stock performance, but this gtx 260 trades blows (It wins out in slightly more benchmarks) with the 4890.

speaking of... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814161299 $160 After MIR.
It's not really fair to compare overclocked cards to non overclocked ones.

There are 1GB 4850s(there are also 512MB 4870s), do we know which the OP has? In any case, any of the Nvidia cards recommended to the OP will perform nicely and work with OS X. I can't confirm since I don't use it, but I imagine Radeon cards work just fine with the Mac OS as well since tons of Apple computers have Radeons nowadays.
Look at what he wrote:
"find me a game that the 260 is even in OC distance from and i'll gladly yield"
And that is exactly what I did.
There's some scenarios specially when Anti Aliasing is used on high resolutions were the HD 4870 is twice as fast because the HD 4850 would run out of VRAM. But an nVidia counterpart for the HD 4850 definitively the GTS 250, no contest.
