Second the comments on the 2800T. I picked one up when costco had their $300 instant rebate deal a few months ago. Got the same config as Askani for a little less $ (no wireless though). It did take a while for me to get it though, but they credited me $60 since they took so long.

This laptop is great. Very solid and very fast. I am very happy with the purchase.

For those of you with 2800T's, how's the battery life?

Did you guys get the 15" screen or 14.1"? Does the 15" screen add overall size/weight to the laptop (compared to the 14.1")?

I've been drooling over this laptop for a while.....just wish it had a trackpoint, rather than touchpad (i hate those things 😛)

(My infrared remote control runs off the serial port. I use if for playing videos with my desktop machine.)

OT: Did anyone pick up one of the Compaq 1500T's at Best Buy for $1599 a couple weeks ago? It looks like the same size as the 2800, but it has a 2.2GHz desktop chip, 32MB Radeon, USB2 AND Firewire.

I'd like to hear any opinions about it, and how it compares to the 2800.

Preaario 1500

I have the 15" screen on my 2800T. It is XGA (1024x768) though since my bad eyes can't handle small fonts. Battery time is pretty good - ~3 hours. On a cross country flight, I can watch a whole movie with about 20 minutes to spare. It has a large foot print though because of the large screen, but it is lighter than the 8200 which is why I chose it.

I like the touchpad better than the eraser head pointers. What is really useful for me is the scroll button below the touch pad buttons. Very convenient when scrolling through documents.

Edit: I wish mine had a db9 serial port. I use a lot of test equipment which connects using the serial port.

That Compaq 1500T looks pretty intriguing....

Mobile Celeron 1.4GHz-M
256MB DDR RAM
20GB HD
24X CD-ROM
15" TFT ($50 extra)
32MB DDR Radeon 7500
802.11b Mulitport (mail in)

$1189 plus shipping and taxes.

A little bigger and heavier than the 2800 series, but pretty good, IMO.
1500T: 1.5" x 12.9" x 10.5" (6.69 lbs)
2800T: 1.3" x 12.48" x 10.1" (5.7lbs....5.4 lbs w/ weight saver)

Whatcha guys think?

i agree with ur first reason rossman...but windoze key!?!??!? god i remember hating the thing when it first came out...chalk that up as a positive damnit!

I know I know call me weird but there's a friggin' function key in it's place. WTF is up with that?

-there is a windows key if I remember correctly, my friend has this laptop, it is INCONVENIENTLY located in the upper right hand corner of the keyboard (where the ins, del, home, end) is located.
-this lappie *does* have VGA out but not tv out (no svideo or component).
-i forgot what video card is in there, i believe its an Intel integrated adapter. with a driver update it can use up to 32mb of frame buffer.
-a spare battery will run you 100, battery life run from 1hr 45 to less (if it is indeed the NiMH battery which I suspect it is...)

At this point, I don't think I can recommend this laptop with new p4s coming out. unless you *really* want a sub 1000 laptop. (there'll still be tax at costco)

I guess I have to put a disclaimer: YMMV 😉

I'm going to BB tomorrow to price one out at their Creation Station. If it's the same price as Compaq online I am going to order one. I need a laptop for classes next semester and this is thebest price on a P4 laptop. I'll let you all know tomorrow what happens!

Windows key is always on the top right hand corner for Toshiba laptops.

And no windows key being a positive? You're kidding... Think of the efficiency you get from a windows key!

Just a note: the price I mentioned was for a Mobile Celeron CPU, not a P4. The P4's on the 1500T series is a desktop CPU, I believe. So, you run the risk of a hot laptop and shorter battery life. Although, I haven't seen any review on the 1500 series yet.

Yes I know. But I thought the Celeron was based on the P4? Just with the less cache? I can live with the shorter battery life of the desktop processor (at least it will be fast - hehe). I have a P4 2.2 desktop processor brand new in the box that I got from a trade. I'm going to pop that bad boy in there. That's of course if i even buy the laptop at all.

Anyone buy one of these and what do you think and any rebates? This looks like one nice lappy as-is.

ProfessorFate - Thanks for the info I just updated this threads title to make it a little more enticing.

That laptop looks loaded except I wish it had a UXGA LCD display and FireWire but for $1499 it seems like a nice deal.

bleh i want something in the 1200 range

too much!

There's been some awesome Dell Inspiron 8200 deals lately, hopefully they'll return soon.

bump for a FRICKIN AWESOME laptop. i got mine for 1230 - p4 1.5, 15" svga+, 128ram, etc. and i have absolutely no quirks about it except one: there is no CTRL key on the right side. No biggie. if it wasnt for that this laptop would be perfect.

After all the deliberation, I'm going in this afternoon to BB to price one out!! I'll keep you guys in the loop. (This is for the Compaq 1500).

I've seen the Compaq Presario 1500 at the local CompUSA. It's an all-in-one - has integrated floppy. Closer to the Dell Inspiron 8200 in size and weight. Doesn't look as nice or sleek as the 2800 series and uses the desktop P4 (i.e. crappier battery life), but it's cheaper and has firewire (along with USB 2.0).

One thing I'm curious about... People that own the 2800 (or the 1500), isn't the keyboard arrangement kind of annoying? I mean how the space bar is really short and the insert key is right next to it. I think the insert key is one of the most annoying keys on a computer keyboard and for it to be placed where you would think the rest of the space bar would be seems annoying. Seems easy to hit that insert key by accident, and that is majorly annoying when working in Word. Any owners have any comments about this?

Also, one thing I dislike about both the Dell 8200 and the Compaq 2800 is how they use that cheap plastic space-filler to protect the PC Card slots (or in the Compaq's case, slot). Why can't they have hinged doors in their high end models, like HP, Toshiba and IBM?

Well, I just came back from BB empty handed - LOLOL The 1500 was too heavy. I looked at both the 1500 and the 2800, and I must say, the keyboard bended when I typed on it. Maybe I'm just used to the IBM T series keyboards that are considered the best?! Either way, they looked nice, but both were too heavy for me. I don't care what anyone says, I need portability and these Compaqs don't cut it (and of course that leaves the Dells out of it too). I guess I need an ultraportable?! Either way I am holding off until the laptops have reached a decent size, weight....etc Anyone can point me to a place with good ultrportables? Even if I have to pay $1k more for the IBM machines, it will be worth it in my opinion. And now I am fully convinced that the IBMs are the way to go.

Just my .02

Well, I will be in the market for a laptop in a few weeks, but if I had to choose right now I would pick the new Compaq Presario 900 series..... What makes them special???

Athlon XP 1700+ at 266 FSB with DDR!!! Yes, they use the new ATI Radeon 320 IGP. Better wait to see them falling in price. 🙂

If you're a fan of the T series, a nice comparable laptop is the Compaq Evo N600c/N610c series. It is actually thinner and lighter than the T series but sports a 14 inch screen and an optical drive. The 610's offer P4-M and USB 2.0. Not an ultraportable, but one of the lighter thin & lights. The Toshiba Portege 4000 series and the Fujitsu Lifebook S series are even lighter and also include an optical drive, but have smaller screens. For my money, the IBM T series and the aforementioned Evo's are the cream of the crop.

How is the XGA screen on the 2800's? I really enjoy my Compaq P900 CRT at high resolutions... I know a laptop will never compare (except maybe UXGA), but will XGA be acceptable?

the Compaq 2801CL model is for the costco B&M.....I just check with the costco website they only have the T series....when I configured to the minimal offered....cost came out to be $2200+.......and the $100 coupon can only be used on costco.com....so until we see what comes up during the offering date....this deal is cold.......
