Is this laptop a pig or something?
Seems like a decent deal for a laptop I can actually purchase.

I just ordered mine on the phone. I will likely ebay the printer. A better deal for me than best-buy, because I don't have to stand in line.

Will I see a drastic improvement from a Pentium M 1.6 ghz ?
With the laptop mentioned above

Thinking of doing the "crazy rebates" deal with this laptop....

Edit: Look at the wallet that is not skinny.

For me this Comcrap was a much better deal than the BB deal. No tax and I was actually able to get one (two actually). Although I did like the card reader, etc on the Gatestray.

I stopped at BB at 8:10 and the guy actually chuckled at me when I asked where the $399 laptops were located. He said the 7 they had in stock were gone by 8:00:30.

Has HP ever fixed their Power Jack issues? For a long time their power jacks have come unsoldered from their motherboards.

Probably not.

My opinions of virtually any laptop is not *if* it will break but when. In corporate life I saw Toshibas, Gatways, Compaq's, Dells, you name it and they all ended up broken. That's why I will use one of these laptops for about 11 and a half months, then sell it off and upgrade to a new model.

The cool thing about getting one this cheap is that you can break even or sometimes even make a little and have the use of the box for almost a year. The best part about buying one this time of year is that resell is pretty easy this time of year, every year, provided you keep it looking new.

The last laptop I sold cost me $625 on sale. I sold it 6 years later for $495.

I personally love the Acer I picked up last week. I dont think the screen looks as nice as my older Dell laptop but @ 14" and 5lbs the Acer is way more portable.

Not a bad deal, but those inkjet printers tend to be bottom-of-the line inkjets. Also, you're gambling that you'll get all of your rebates back and you pay sales tax on the before rebate prices.

i've had good luck with cheap laptops...right now i'm using a toshiba i got for 450 and its going on 18 months with no issues.

Well I fired one of these up last night.

Screen looks very good. No dead or lit pixels.

Seems to run at a decent clip with 1Gb of RAM. Will upgrade to 2Gb later this month.

I'm fairly new to Vista (The other machines I have with Vista run Basic.)

Can someone tell me about this Areo thing. I believe I have it turned on correctly but am not really seeing anything exciting. The frame of the windows appears translucent but I haven't noticed much else. I guess I thought it was really suppose to wow me.

My local BM was OOS but was able to order both the laptop and printer online. Estimated delivery date is tomorrow. Planning on giving this to my wife for Christmas so this should work out fine.

I have several questions regarding the memory upgrade. From what I can find on specs, it comes stock 1GB with what appears to be 2 - 512mb dimms. Since there are only two slots, the installed 1GB is wasted if I upgrade to 2GB because I will have to discard both dimms. Quick check on ebay shows that 512mb dimms are essentially worthless.

Is there a significant performance boost by increasing the installed 1GB memory? My desktop machine runs fine with 1GB (Win XP Pro). Does Vista require more RAM? Also, curious if the RAM is shared with the video?

I see that Staples has PNY 1 GB dimms on sale, 1 GB for $28 and a 2GB for $55 (2 X 1GB). From what I can tell, that seems to be a good price for namebrand RAM. Can I mix one new 1GB dimm and keep one 512mb dimm? Will a total of 1.5GB RAM be adequate? Or, should I go ahead and buy the 2GB upgrade and be done with it?

BTW, I saw one of these laptops running in the store. For the price, it seems to be a very nice unit. Granted it doesn't have the build or features that my company issued Compaq 6910p has but my wife is not a road warrior so it will not have to endure the abuse that I subject a laptop to.

I read in another post that it is not a question of if a laptop is going to fail but "when"? My experience is a mixed bag. In 15 years, I would say that displays were initially the biggest problem but seem to have become more durable in the last 3-4 years. After that, thermal and power supply related problems come next. If it has a CD/DVD drive, these don't last very long, either complete failure or erratic poor performance. Then, you began having case/chassis related problems due to falls or crushing (sometimes you just have to shove it under that airline seat in front of you...even if the bag doesn't want to go!). .

I have carried multiples of IBM, Toshiba and Dell. My experience is that Toshiba has been the best, Dell next and IBM the worst. To be fair, the IBM's were early Thinkpads, nice form factor but way too fragile. I have never heard a kind work regarding Gateway's from an experienced user. As mentioned earlier, my latest is a Compaq 6910p, about a month now, so no long term experience. It currently seems rather quirky or may only be the result of all the security crap that the CNN's (that's Corporate Network Nazis) have forced on users.

Saying that, overall I think laptops/notebooks today are pretty stable and far more durable...a commodity product in some respects. Unless you are going to be traveling heavily (say, abuse), I would think any name brand laptop should provide fairly trouble free performance

Did not mean to go so OT but hope someone can answer my questions re memory.

Thanks, Mac

I got an even better deal on this. I was talking to the sales person about it at my local Staples and he told me that besides the free printer you can also get 20% off on three items for this laptop or any laptop at Officemax. So I got 20% off the 2Gig of Ram that is on sale for$54, 20% off a Targus Back Pack, and 20% off Photoshop Elements 5 that is also on sale. I was going to pick a faster hard drive but they were OOS.
