The whermacht does feel very strong in comparison to russians, especially with their vehicles.

Here's a few things I noticed that might need tuning...

- Garrisoned units are almost freaking invincible. I've tossed one unit that has next to no life left getting pummeled by 2-3 scout cars, a MGS squad and some infantry and they took about 10 minutes to die, only because I forgot about them and they got mortared. In COH buildings only acted as some cover, units took damage if they get shot at.

- "light" vehicles take no damage from small arms fire, or so little that it doesn't matter. I remember having a fighting chance with rifleman in COH if I came up face to face against some light vehicles so long as I have green cover. Here: forget it.

- Ostwind panzer is freaking inaccurate. REALLY inaccurate and takes 5-6 full volleys to take down units moving IN THE OPEN.

- Fire effects really aren't clear. Some are cosmetic, some burn your ass off. Don't know which one's which so I can only avoid all fires.

- The "cold" meter seems to be bugged to some degree. I've had more than a few units that got stuck in "freezing" status and kept losing men even though they were right next to a huge bonfire. Didn't warm up when I had them retreat either.

That's all I got...

A word about the bolded, I haven't encountered that at all. I've taken out multiple light vehicles with shock infantry and conscripts. Takes 2-3 units, but it can be done.

I am really digging the game. Slightly slower pace than the original but still glorious in its carnage and demand for top notch micro. Plus its the Eastern Front, which is awesome!

So what's the top number of kills anyone has gotten ? The KV-8 flamethrower tank is far and away my go-to killing machine. I had 78 kills with it in a game today. And I thought the mortar was just a bit OP.... :awe:

I'm sure shock infantry can do it, considering they can be equipped with the ppsh 41. Can conscripts actually damage scout cars though? I've had to retreat a long time before the conscripts did any significant damage.

In COH you can be in green cover and win against a scout car easily.

So one thing I just learned playing as Soviet:

Halftracks halftracks halftracks. With the AA upgrade they will SHRED any opposing infantry, even AT infantry. In the latter case they'll usually get 1 volley of AT fire off, which might take away half a halftrack's life, but they'll be shredded by quad-barrel AA fire before they get off another.

upgraded halftracks + upgraded conscript support >>>> anything up to and including light vehicles.

Is there a skirmish mode vs the cpu? I would not mind to try the game, but dont want to get slaughtered by on-line pros.

Because people have just started playing the beta, I noticed that your chances are pretty high of playing against someone with either no or little experience. Furthermore, the computer on normal is actually pretty difficult when you're first learning to play. My attitude is to just start a game against an easy CPU, figure out the mechanics, and then hop straight into a match versus another player.

Pshhh, $60 ?? Try $100 for the Digital Collectors Edition, which is the only way I'd buy this game. The DLC should be worth it, but is it $100 worth it ?? I will buy it, but it pains me to admit that I will spend a Benjy on it too :(

Why would anyone buy the collector's edition? What is so great about some soundtracks and skins that makes it worth $40 on top of the regular price?

Start a game vs 2 AI's and put an AI on your team. The AI on your team will keep the other two busy while you mess about and get your shit together. Thats worked for me so far, gave me breathing space to spam ferdinands etc.

Hmm how do you add an AI on your team? I was looking for that but couldn't figure it out. Ended up getting paired with some other dude who kept lagging so I kicked him and that gave me an AI team mate, but there's gotta be an easier way lol.

This was just a skirmish with me and the AI's, dunno if its an option for other game types with people.

I know that's what I want, skirmish with just AIs. How do you do that? :p

I was never a big fan of Victory Point, so I have been playing mostly Annihilation. It's a lot harder to finish off the AI than it is to hold 2 VPs for long enough.

I do like to gain XP tho, so that's where a game of VP with a 1,000 point setting comes in handy. I roll out an Elefant as soon as can and it opens up Soviet armor like a hot knife through butter.

I'm starting to get slightly annoyed with the blizzards - I had 3 in one game my last game and it amounts to a quick trip to the fridge or the john while I wait it out for 2 minutes. Yea, yea .. I know .. it's weather tossed in to make sure you are using sound strategy, but its a touch too gimmicky when used too often.

Wait I didn't know you could set up a 1,000 pt game in the open beta!?

Yep, use Max's pic in the post above mine. Select 'Custom game' then under the map pic itself select 'Options'. That allows you to set other parameters.

@Astro - why would anyone buy the DCE ?? Maybe because CoH 1 was their favorite PC game, which comprises over 20+ years of gaming dating back to the EGA (not VGA) version of Lakers vs. Celtics. Select your all time fave game and ask yourself whether you'd buy additional content for it.

The additional DLC being added (ignore the skins - they are nothing but TF2 hats to me) such as the Theater of War and extra commanders is enough to justify it for me. Feel free to disagree - its a free country.

Lol, good thing you're playing AI. I once cut off my opponent's primary supply line and captured a victory point during a blizzard, and he was trying to do similar to me. Blizzards are no excuse to do nothing, especially if you have armor.

Ditto VP sucks, i always played annihilate in CoH 1, made for epic long back and forth battle on maps like montargis or hogwild gap.

I've found it really depends on who's playing. Just the other day I had an epic 4v4 VP match where my team (Soviets) won. We had about 25 points left at the end. :p

It was insanely tight, to the point where both sides were essentially doing suicide waves with whatever they had into the two critical points. I actually felt pretty badass when on a hunch I sent a single unit of conscripts in a halftrack and took the third point both teams had been completely neglecting.

Yeah maybe earlier in a game they might thwart one's strategy, but by the time vehicles roll onto the scene they generally become mere annoyances more than anything else.

Even in the early game, Soviet conscripts can just use their battle cry ability to zoom between points with fire pits.

Edit: I am also interested to see what other maps will be available in the retail version. Also, are there any units they've omitted from the beta?

As far as I know, there are more Commanders available, and they will then open up more vehicle types. What would CoH be without a Tiger or King Tiger tank in it ?? That's one example of a missing tank in the beta.

I always loved playing against the Wermacht AI and when I was baseraping him he'd drop a KT on me as a last ditch effort to pull out a win. I used a combo group of Engies with a sniper and would hunt AT guns, sniping them, then commandeering them with my Engies. When that KT showed up, he'd be facing 3 or 4 Pak 38s that made quick work of him.
