i built this computer im on right now without a single problem. but i decided i wanted to upgrade my old computer a little. heres whats going on

used all the parts like dvd rom, 3 fans, floppy disc and 20 gig hard drive (fujitsu brand, unformatted) from the old computer
all the new parts are the 300w psu, pny gforce2 400mx, pc2100 ddr, mobo and cpu. its a 1.7m p4 cpu with a via p4x-266 mainboard
i put everything in the same way that i did on this computer. also i put thermal paste on the cpu so it wouldnt get fried.

i plug in everything and start it up. the comp doesnt post, it doesnt go to bios and the keyboard doesnt work. i have power to the fans, floppy drive, heatsink and dvd rom. i have switched all the parts, except the cpu, mobo and psu, into this computer to see if they worked and they did.

whats going on? did i short out the mobo or cpu? bad psu or not enough power?

The first thing you should try is to pull the video card and reseat it. Then memory and cpu.

Also, clear the BIOS, use the jumper settings and pull the battery out. Wait for a while, I heard up to 30 minutes and less.

Along with what SemperFi said, with the video card, memory, and cpu, but just have those plugged in, unplug the HDD, DVD, etc. just have those 3 componets in.

Try to borrow a PS from a friend and test it. Also who makes your PS? Wattage? Amps on 3.3V rail and 5 V rail? Should be on a sticker on the side of the PS.

antech model pp-303xp 300watt power supply
amp on 3.3 volt rail = 20
amp on 5 volt rail = 50

set at 115 volts not at 230

it says that it has enough power to supply a p4 and 1.7 and up

ive also tried 2 power supplies (spare parts all around this place). both worked fine before i decided to upgrade

did you install the brass standoffs correctly? did you make sure they aren't thouching somewhere on the motherboard besides the holes?
