Commuter train derails in suburban LA

If it's true that the car was placed there intentionally, I smell murder charges being filed.

Man...that is terrible.

My deepest condolences for those folks and their families.

<-- grew up in LA...will go back if I can afford a house.

yeah, i heard about this on the way to school . . . .

happened only about 10 miles from where i live . . .

i think i saw one of my city's paramedic fire trucks things over there while watching tv

My work is only half a mile away from the accident seen. I can see and hear helicopters flying from my window. Apparently, some asswipe tried to commit suicide and chickened out the last minute while leaving his vehicle parked on the rail.

3rd degree, I'm guessing?

So... the guy was suicidal... changes his mind at the last second, but his suicide attempt kills 10 people?! What an idiot! This is probably the one time where death penalty is the opposite of what he deserves. They should make him sit in a cell and watch videos of the wreckage every day for the rest of his life.

I'll bet he's changed his mind again and is now thinking... "gee, when you put it in perspective, my life didn't suck before.... now it *really* sucks."

Quick note to those considering suicide: Do it and don't try to harm anyone else in your attempt. >.<

10 people are confirmed dead. 🙁 Person who "committed suicide" lived :|

I wonder why they don't have some kind of buried metal detector or inductor or weight sensor at crossings? it could detect a car sized hunk of metal and send a signal to trains so they stop automatically. it's scary how easy it is to cause so much death and damage. it would be so easy for a bunch of terrorists with trucks to make as many trains crash as they wanted.

Wouldn't work. It simply takes too long to stop a train. Nothing would prevent someone from driving a car onto the tracks when the train was a few hundred yards away, and a train can't stop in time. Plus, even if there were sensors, we'd have to stop at railroad crossings long before the train actually got there, since it takes so long for them to stop. I don't want to have to wait longer.

This kind of crap makes me sick to my stomach. I hope this guy is convicted and rots in jail for the rest of his life, while getting his salad tossed daily. Then, he'll wish he had commited suicide! This is why I have no sympathy for the suicidal. I had a friend who was suicidal and I told him if he did it, he'd prove to the world that he was weak, and that I frankly wouldn't give a crap, and I wouldn't mourn at his funeral, nor would I even go. He's just be another forgotten person, and I wouldn't think anything of it. With my help and others, he's turned his life totally around.

from what i'm hearing - the guy was trying to commit suicide, chickened out, left the car on the tracks, and then the trains derailed.

all unconfirmed right now.

:Q:|

If that was the case, he shoulda done what normal people do and not use the friggin car, just throw his body in front of the train or something, not use a 3000lb vehicle that could derail a train and take at least 10 other people with him.

No... I wouldn't wish that on the most obnoxious engineer and conductor working for any railroad line.

Remember TRAINS can't stop on a dime.

150-car freight train stopping distance

30 mph =3,500 feet or 2/3 of a mile
50 mph =8,000 feet or 1 1/2 miles

8-car passenger train stopping distance

60 mph =3,500 feet or 2/3 of a mile
79 mph =6,000 feet or 1 1/8 miles

i guess passenger trains aren't fitted with those V shaped bumpers to knock away or slice through things... i think they should have em though, considering how many people are on a train vs a car.

i was talking to a friend and i told her the same thing - they should put those things back - like the old steam engines used to have. the train probably would not have derailed if that thing was there.
