Racism is human; the need to fear and be suspicious of people who look different is instinctual. But thankfully many can rise above that ancient reaction and be accepting.

I know there is no evidence that racism existed here, but it was canceled because of its appearance.

We know white people aren't the only racists. I've felt the sting of racism in the form of a threat to my life for no apparent reason other than I was a "Mutha f**cking cracka" riding the light rail to downtown L.A. It was ironic; I have championed civil rights since the sixth grade when a black family moved into our lily white neighborhood and were gone within a year because of harassment, according to my father. I went to school with their children where everyone got along, but the adults sadly couldn't. To me it was the height of unfairness.

Rising above racism includes avoiding its appearance. Humans hate being treated unfairly.

;) Play your P/N games if you want. The school shut down the event and the responsible parties apologized. When the KKK has a similar problem we can talk about that then.

The KKK is private; they can invite who they want.

OTOH, this is a publicly funded institution; they can't.

I really don't want to disagree.

But it seems to me this has been mischaracterized as a "diversity" event when it wasn't designed as such. From the article it appears to me it was designed as an event limited to people of color. It wasn't a diversity event, it was to to "build support and community" for people of color and talk about white supremacy and white privilege etc.

So, I'm guessing I am disagreeing because the invitation was well written in that regard. Rather it's the person who came up with the of a color only event who might an a**hole.

I don't how else the invitation could have been written given the parameters of the event.

Until someone can make a group specifically for white people socializing alongside BET, NAACP, negro college fund, black employee groups, etc... etc... without social outcry (media or otherwise) Racism still exists.

IF (strBlackGroup <> Null AND strWhiteGroup = Null) Then
blnRacism = TRUE
END IF

Poor oppressed white men, thy struggle is just.

No, this is wrong. When anyone is denied access because if their race then it does one thing and that is drive a wedge between people. I don't care if you are white or black or purple, you deserve to be treated as a person, and not excluded because of your race.

No.

No

I just found a note to my Dad that read, Thanks dad, you're a God Damned jewel. It was in his hat I pulled from a family cedar chest. Wasn't written by me and don't know the occasion, but I'm passing these words penned years and years ago to you, Hay, for this post.

Yeah, I'm sure your attitude would be exactly the same some non-left-wing organization set up a "whites only" happy hour excluding everyone else. I'm sure a "oops, sorry about that, next time we'll be more discreet about the discrimination" would be perfectly sufficient then as well.

If they were really serious about making it really be diversity and not simply a cover for racism, they should fire whoever had anything to do with the idea of setting up an event and excluding people based on their race. Racism should not be tolerated, no matter what banner it hides behind.

Also, the point is that it should never have been something that they had to be "called out on" for it to get reversed. Anyone involved in trying to promote diversity should be even more sensitive to racist exclusion. It should never have gotten past the "why don't we...." stage, that just shows that racism is prevalent within the group organizing the event.

Guarantee that group learned from this. Wanna make a personal bet some GOP candidate or prominent group invites Ted Nugent to speak or stump for them before Nov election.

You know the same Ted Nugent that called the President a "sub-human mongrel"

Business as usual. Diversity has always meant "as few whites as possible."

I don't think I've ever heard anyone complain about how Native American reservations need to increase diversity by bringing in more Whites.

"Secret racist meeting tomorrow, where we can bash Whitey and conspire in peace. Bring your spouse and a casserole."

Someone needs to be fired and that whole college should be investigated. That's seriously fucked up.

Not defending them at all. They did the wrong thing got called on it and the college reversed course. Take notes righties.

BTW - Did the college blame the media???

Thing is, righties can't have it as easy. If the roles were reversed there would be a media frenzy and calls for resignations but seeing as how it was lefties a simple apology and all is well, no harm done.
